New renderings from UCSF:

Can't say I'm too impressed, the design looks very bland and will likely be dated quickly. At least the shape is somewhat interesting I guess?

Looks great. I'm also getting Japanese vibes. Like a modern pagoda.

But you should be getting Swiss vibes . . . from Herzog & de Meuron like the DeYoung :

I wonder if people will start coming up with nicknames for this building someday if it gets built. I like it!

Yeah I'm still not getting any traditional Swiss architectural vibes even though they're a Swiss architecture firm.

From the 10th floor on, the gradual tiered eaves is a classic element of pagoda architecture.

Here's another example of a modern take on a pagoda in Indianapolis.

I'm also seeing some strong ties to Ping Yuen Central as well:

Either way, I'm sure we can all agree that Herzog & De Meuron has an outstanding portfolio, and this building is going to be the crown jewel of all hospitals in California, both architecturally and medically (given UCSF's world renowned prowess).

^^Lived in Japan for a year and a half so I've seen a few pagodas. But the last rendering in my post above reminds me of an MesoAmerican step pyramid more than a pagoda.

I was in Monte Alban last month and that Indianapolis building immediately said 'Asia' to me, not Mexico.

The fatness of it said Japanese, as did the minimalist look, as did the whiteness of it (Japanese modern buildings all essentially follow the same plan).

The "step pyramid" shape is a very common Japanese architectural feature, not just Mesoamerican. See the dome of the National Parliament:

Or Osaka Castle:

Or Himeji Castle:

Reminds me like a taller modern update of Tokyo's old neo-traditional Hotel Akura:

Like I said, I lived in Japan for 15 months and all I can tell you is what it says to me which is an alternative view. But that one new rendering where it pops up out of the city hills covered with trees just reminds me strongly of a Mayan temple popping up out of the jungle and the vegetation on an upper floor reinforces it resembling the jungle reclaiming a ruined pyramid.

BY: ANDREW NELSON 5:00 AM ON MAY 26, 2022

The University of California Board of Regents has approved plans and a $4.3 billion budget to build 1.5 million square feet for the UCSF Parnassus Heights campus in San Francisco. The master plan expands the medical complex’s constrained capacity with design by Herzog & de Meuron. According to UCSF, construction is expected to start work next year.

I didn't love this proposal at first, but I'm starting to warm up to it. The building shape is unique, and its size and location will make it a prominent landmark for this part of the city. It's always exciting to see a new landmark take shape, so hopefully this delivers.

Slim columns occasionally pop up in Herzog and de Meuron designs. Like this:

This photo shows progress on the new oxygen tank yard just South of the site. Can this thread be moved to under construction? Building demolition has begun. Also can the height of the building be updated to its actual height of 293'?
