MONTRÉAL :: Restaurants

Antep Kabab (De Maisonneuve next to JMSB)

This has been my go to place at Concordia. I love the food there, and the prices are extremely reasonable. Their bread, the mint sauce and the charcoal-grilled chicken =

That looks delish. Id need to try it out when I am around ConU.

Has anyone ever tried out IceHouse in The Plateau?
Its gotta be one of my new favorite places for tacos. The fried chicken taco and shrimp tacos are too die for.
Its a Tex Mex restaurant that has about 20 seats. Its quite small but so worth the 8 bucks for 2 tacos. If you want to splurge a bit there is the lobster burrito that is orgasmic.
Wash it all down with their famous Bourbon lemonade pitchers. So delish and refreshing come summer and terrasse season.

In the picture there is the Crabcakes and Giant Jalapeno Poppers with the fried chicken taco and beef teriyaki taco. A-mah-zing!

Keeping on the Mile-end train of thought, my favourite place in the hood is Comptoir 21. Sure their fish and chips are massive and great, but their poutine is marvelous. Really worth the try.

I didn't try out ice house yet, I had no idea this is what they served. I'll have to go soon!

Trying out Kazu (japanese restaurant on Ste-Cath) tonight. Should be good!

I love this place too. Cheap food but it is tasty and a bit healthy too.

The Gazette reviewed the Korean restaurant GaNaDara yesterday. It only opened last September.
http://www.montrealgazette.com/life/...864/story.html

I went there a few weeks ago and really liked it. It was my first time having non-food court Korean food.

It was extremely good, and very reasonably priced. I got the Bulgogi and the bill came to under $10 after tax. The atmosphere of the restaurant is also unique.

It is located on the corner of De Maisonneuve and Saint-Marc.

I give it a 4.5/5.

I'm curious how you liked Kazu?
I went to Imadake (Ste cath across from place Alexis Nihon) last week and it was amazing, best izakaya I've tried in a while. Definitely on the same level as good ones in Vancouver.

Stopped in at Antep Kabab on my way home from the airport because of the recommendation here.... that chicken sandwich was HEAVENLY! Definitely won't be my last visit.

I'm also a frequent customer of Boustan, just a few blocks east. Delicious, delicious shawarma.

And nobody can beat Rockaberry for dessert! (the rest of their menu is decent, too)

^ Glad you liked it!

I like Boustan as well. I can't say I've noticed a drop in quality since the ownership changed.

That area around Concordia is probably the best area in Montreal for variety of cheap restaurants (particularly Middle Eastern food).

It's about time too, I'll never understand why it was outlawed to begin with. Yeah I heard the official spin, restaurants are afraid of this, sidewalks will be filthy with that, but I just don't buy that.

I noticed that the abandoned building at the corner of St. Catherine West and Pierce is being renovated to make way for a "Quick Burger" restaurant.

Does anyone know if this is the same Franco-Belgian fast food joint, known partially for its creative marketing gimmicks?

The fish and chips are good but for me the real highlight is the chowder. Just delicious.

En tout cas rien n'indique sur leur sites une futur ouverture(et expansion) canadienne

Since tacos seems to be all the rage, I decided to check out Cartel on Fairmont. The location seems familiar to me on arrival - oh yeah - this used to be Berlin.

First impressions were quite good. It's dark, with a lot of candles and the decor is very dark wood heavy. Those are pluses in my book. As for negatives - it has a bit of that cheesy lower St Laurant vibe with that repetitive heavy beat lounge type music that goes along with it. Anyway on to the food....

I ordered some fish tacos and an eggplant taco. The eggplant taco wasn't so hot - a bit soggy and overwhelmed by the feta (an odd choice?) but the fish tacos were delicious. Crispy deep fried fish morsels topped with a tangy slaw, an avocado puree and crema with a small wedge of lime on the side. Apparently these are 'tapa' type tacos so they are not too large. I had four and they filled me up quite well. This was also 'two dollar tuesday taco' so by my calculations this comes out to roughly half price depending on what type of tacos you choose.

Verdict - A definite recommendation from me (especially on tuesdays)

It seems that Montreal is finally making amends for places like Carlos and Pepes.

Probably my all-time favorite comfort food joint in Montreal. The one. The only. The Chalet BBQ. Since 1944. Sherbrooke at Decarie.

^ One of my favourites as well. And the best part is that they won't ever change who they are to appeal to well-moneyed yuppies (unlike Laurier BBQ which became Laurier Gordon Ramsay in 2011, then Laurier 1936 and is now closed... I guess they didn't care about their original clientele.).
