555 West 22nd Street: Robert A.M. Stern-designed condo in West Chelsea tops out and gets red-brick skin

Quote:
After the knockout success of Tribeca's 70 Vestry Street and the sales launch of Lantern House, Related Companies has wasting no time erecting their next Manhattan West Side condo development at 555 West 22nd Street. In summer 2018, a U-Haul compound was cleared away and caissons made their way into the ground; two years since, the project's concrete is nearly topped out at 25-story, roughly 300-foot high.

The project, situated half a block from the High Line, touches both West 23rd and 22nd Streets, and will anchor almost a full blockfront of Eleventh Avenue. The site overlooks Chelsea Waterside Park, Chelsea Piers, and Hudson River Park.

The imposing massing, designed by Robert A. M. Stern Architects, promises to bring a bit of classical charm to West Chelsea's Hudson River waterfront. A previous rendering showed a light stone building, but the building is receiving the red brick facade seen in earlier images. It will also be rich in traditional elements such as bay windows, rusticated lower floors, and setbacked massing.

An offering plan was filed in December 2019 for 144 residential units, and a very robust amenity package is said to include on-site parking, a spa, fitness center, and resident lounges. There will also be a sports court, yoga room, cardio center, event lounge, dog grooming area, toddler room, family room, children's playroom, music room, and screening room. SLCE is the architect of record for the development.

Assembly Of Masonry Façade Continues At 555 West 22nd Street In Chelsea

Quote:
Work is steadily progressing on the red brick curtain wall of 555 West 22nd Street, a 26-story condominium building in Chelsea. Designed by Robert A. M. Stern Architects and developed by Related Companies with SLCE Architects as the architect of record, the nearly 300-foot-tall reinforced concrete superstructure stands right across from the Hudson River and Hudson River Park. The 250,000-square-foot project will yield 141 units, averaging around 2,245 square feet apiece.

Recent photos show the rising envelope and cinderblock formation for the grid of windows. Some of the metal clips are attached to the edges of the floors plates and will eventually hold a portion of the perimeter walls.

Not much has been revealed about the interiors and residential units, but proposed amenities include a residential lounge, an event room, a game center, a business center, a fitness center, a basement pool with lockers, bicycle storage, and a dog spa. A select number of homes will come with private outdoor terraces found along the multiple setbacks.

Construction on 555 West 22nd Street will likely be completed sometime next year.

Watching actual brickwork going up - and not pre-cast brick panels - is quite the treat. Especially when it's textured like this. Old school craftsmanship at work, which I'm sure doesn't come cheap.

Its a gem. AM Stern really knows NY. Work of arts, in tune with the city, and one's that have that NY image written all over it, with an emphasis on its legacy and past. 520 Park, 99 Church, 220 South, 555 W 22nd, and many more.

Hopefully that U-Haul rubbish next to this bites the dust. Cleaning up the trash, replaced by one tower at a time. In time, many more crappy low rises or 2-3 floor structures will go away.

Pics by me. Taken tonight.

This one can be tricky to spot. Its to the right. So look at the ESB, and look at the bright wide building to its right.
