Article from Hotel Design magazine, couple interior renderings inside...

Pei Cobb Freed, Yabu Pushelberg collaborate for $2.5B Century Plaza project

Quote:
In Los Angeles, the Century Plaza Hotel development project, which includes two 46-story luxury residential towers, restaurants, retail shops and a newly designed 400-room five-star hotel, will get under way this March. The $2.5-billion project is expected to be completed in early 2018.

Located at the intersection of Avenue of the Stars and Constellation Boulevard, the 1.5-million-square-foot hotel and mixed use development will be the centerpiece of a redevelopment occurring in Century City including the $800-million expansion of the Westfield Century City Mall and over 10 million square feet of offices, residences, restaurants, retail and entertainment venues.

The hotel, which has a crescent shape, and was originally designed by Minoru Yamasaki, will be restored with 394 guestrooms and suites, and 63 residences. The open-air lobby will be transformed by design firm Yabu Pushelberg connecting public plazas and fountains to a central two-acre garden surrounded by restaurants and retail. In total, there will be 100,000 square feet of retail on the site. The two 46-story towers designed by Pei Cobb Freed will have 290 residences.

Awesome project! Totally missed this one. It will be interesting to have another twin towers in CC. Sounds like a lot of improvements are being made. I haven't been in years. Last time I was there was to go to Dive! The only thing that makes CC still a dud for me is the lack of a Metro Line connection. Not that I don't drive but it's just the kind of place I ever feel compelled to drive to. But I would go there on Metrorail.

I love this project. Especially that they left the original Century Plaza hotel.

This project is very cool. Fairmont will be a great hotel to go in that location also...

I wonder if they intend to build the towers sequentially or in tandem. I'm hoping for tandem but maybe the space is too tight for that.

Nice!

I'm excited for these.

Their (probably approximate) height is 600 feet (183 meters) as well, at least according to SSC. The renderings make them look more like 550' though.

Have the towers started to rise above the foundation yet?

Yes. I walked by the development this morning in the rain and they're starting to rise above street level. I also visited their website to see if there were more images of what is to come, and was really impressed by the interior...

I think the interior exceeds the exterior

Agree. The mid 1960s curved Century Plaza is a modernist landmark. The two slim 46 story towers rising behind it are great additions. Any new photo updates of the construction? They must be several stories above ground by now. The last photos were back in March.

Crazy to think it, but it's been two years since I posted my last update on the Century Plaza towers, which at the time (April 2017) were pretty far along into the shoring and excavation phase. This one is from Sunday, and we're finally at the standard residential floorplate on both towers, so they should start rising a bit quicker now.

Thanks for the update! Some projects seem to rise faster than others--look at Metropolis for example. They must have had a more aggressive construction schedule with more workers. This project moves at a more stately snailish pace apparently. Hopefully it will start rising faster now. A floor a week perhaps? I vaguely recall reading that the Empire State Building went up at a floor a day or two once the foundation was completed and the steel got above ground level. Of course it was the start of the Great Depression, so they had no problem finding workers and materials. Finding enough workers and resources in a building boom must be more challenging...but Metropolis did it. If the current boom is winding down as some have said (I'm not totally convinced yet it is slowing down that much), perhaps the projects still going up will move faster, having less competition for workers & materials.
