If I remember correctly, Century City's height limit is slightly under 600 feet. That's due to FAA regulations for the nearby Santa Monica Airport though, not the protests of westside NIMBYs.

10000 Santa Monica Blvd is also proposed. It's a Jean Novel design. No one really knows the status of this. Last summer, there was a lot of heavy equipment digging on site but nothing else came of it.
I think the Jean Nouvel design was scrapped a few years ago, which is a shame. From what I've read, after all of the digging that occurred in the summer, the lot was filled back in.

These guys also had an interesting design for 10000 Santa Monica:

Not only is the old hotel incredible, but it is designed by one of the most prominent architects of all time and a nationally registered landmark.

And about the digging on 1000 Santa Monica Blvd- I went past there this weekend and saw two tractors waiting. Perhaps some more action is imminent?

Now this is really nice. I'd love for this to be built.

Well if someone would like to let me know how I can subscribe without posting it then feel free to tell me, so I don't annoy the fine people of this thread.

I'm pretty sure the height restrictions for Century City have more to do with incoming flight patterns for LAX than it does the Century City master plan. Flights coming from northern cities (SF, San Jose, Seattle, etc.) often start their descent well north of Simi Valley, then take a western turn and fly over Century City and most of mid city before taking a right hand turn just south of downtown and joining the eastbound approach to the runways. Typically this is for airlines that use the North runway (Southwest), but I've been on Horizon flights that use this as well.

Any changing of height restrictions of Century City would go well beyond just getting the NIMBYs on board.

I still can't believe there were some who wanted to tear down this beauty. That would've been unthinkable. LA's a very mid-century city and we should embrace that part of our architectural identity.

Umm, no, LAX navigation has nothing to do with Century City height limits, maybe Santa Monica airport, but the approach vectors to LAX from the North, Transpac, Trans Atlantic, Hawaii are all 5-8,000 feet ASL. You can park a Burj Khalifa in Century City and not be a LAX hazard...besides there is something called the Santa Monica Mountains just a couple miles north of CC.

Here is a typical approach pattern, you are usually at 4000+ at downtown LA, (around 10nm from LAX) Coming in over the Westside you are higher 5K+ before you loop back to 24l.
https://skyvector.com/files/tpp/1401/pdf/00237IL24L.PDF

Just a couple weeks ago IST-LAX our great circle had us come on on an indentical approach that I have flown on having done Bay Area and PDX to LA routes dozens of times.

Or a typical transpac route from NRT to LAX a year earlier

Nice shot of LAX before the 180 turn looking the other direction coming in from SFO

^^^ Yeah i was always under the impression that the Santa Monica airport was the reason why Century City has its height limit... a couple of months ago after the last plane crash at Santa Monica, many people in the neighborhood were saying how they wanted it to be torn down and the news reporter went on to mention the reason for the height restrictions in Century City was because of the airport and if it were torn down, those limits might be lifted.

The front page article of today's LA Times provides the first bit of news about the Century Plaza condo towers in the past year.

http://www.latimes.com/local/la-me-c...ry.html#page=1

Quote:
Meanwhile, Next Century Associates expects to begin construction next year on a $2-billion project to upgrade the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza hotel and erect two 46-story towers behind it.
