It tapers like the building, and that's the best aspect of it.

Was just about to say it's not bound to be iconic, it already is! It's not even done yet haha.

Also, I think it has more presence because of the crown. Eye-catching, even barring finished lighting elements.

I agree with you that the taper is great, but what do you think of the tilt? "Taper" and "tilt" are two separate things. Somehow I had never noticed the tilt until this morning.

The spire doesn't tilt, it's tapered.

This one turned out beautifully... really wish Chicago could get a replica of it where the Thompson Center is today

I understand what pianowizard is saying, especially that night shot. But I also think it's not tilted; it's an illusion caused by the taper of the spire and the building itself. It probably won't be as apparent when the entire crown is lit.

When that entire crown is lit, it will stand out a whole lot more.

There is the answer. That is the only answer.

Thanks for the illustration. I now realize what's going on: the taper is asymmetrical, causing it to appear tilted from certain angles. I personally would have liked a symmetrical taper more, but I do understand the rationale behind the asymmetry.

For a very long time I too thought the spire was straight vertical on one side and tapered on the other sides. Or appeared tilted. I finally waited for great photos from all sides, took two straight edges to the sides of the building and the spire on all four sides and voila..both taper perfectly symmetrical. At least on my little experiment they did.

Thanks for the new photos, but I don't need any further convincing. Again the taper is asymmetrical. In *some* photos, if I focus my attention on the slanted side of the spire, the spire may look a little tilted, but when I pay attention to the vertical side, it doesn't look tilted. It reminds me of the "face-vase illusion" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubin_vase) where the image looks like either a face or vase depending on what we pay attention to.

It's tapered. No need to try and rationalize whe we already know and have always known.

We all love the ESB, especially at night. However, the crown on One Vanderbilt is just massive! Even if they go very conservative and have mostly white light for the lighting, the statement in the night skyline will be undeniable. If color is added,....we might just be in for a show stopper.

I hope they are soon ready to start on cladding the crown. I can hardly wait to see what it is going to look like during the day. Then...the great night unveil. Will it be a gradual testing of the lighting, or a great presentation to the city?

Judging from what they did with the spire, they'll probably get right to it.
