Cool video. Couldn’t tell if the floor slabs were structural clay tile between I-beams. They’re solid normally but if even slightly deteriorated, pieces will go flying everywhere the moment you start renovating a space above or drop something very heavy

Incredible amount of work has gone into accurate historical detail from sourcing limestone from the original quarry which closed in the 80’s to 400+ hours of work by one of the few professional carvers left in the industry. Click the photo link to read article.

Google to work with Ford on Detroit research hub

Quote:
DETROIT (AP) — Ford Motor Co. announced Friday that Google is joining the automaker’s effort to transform a once-dilapidated Detroit train station into a research hub focused on electric and self-driving vehicles.

Also, Detroit and the state of Michigan have agreed to provide infrastructure and other support for the Michigan Central Innovation District that will include the defunct train depot and other nearby buildings in the historic Corktown neighborhood just outside downtown, officials said.

Wow, those Guastavino tiles look incredible. Thanks for posting! I am very excited to see this building when all is completed.

Are they preserving the ability to use this as an actual train station or is Ford making that impossible?

The primary use of this building should always be as a train station.

Unclear. The plans for the train deck/platform area are still pretty vague. Obviously 2 freight tracks going to/from the tunnel will remain, and they will probably set aside one of the original 7 platforms for future passenger rail use and leave it unrenovated. The rest of the train deck may be used as some kind of park or plaza space, think NYC High Line.

Remember, Ford is leading the renovation but it's up to Amtrak and city/state leaders to run any rail service. Until there is an agreement in place to do that, Ford isn't gonna build any facilities for rail apart from maybe setting aside some space. Amtrak has a vague plan to run Chicago-Toronto service which would use this station, and CP has indicated that they are open to the idea of sharing their tracks to make this happen, but so far nobody has committed actual money towards that plan - and cross-border service has issues with Homeland Security/Customs that would need to be sorted out. Even if that Toronto train did start running, the Wolverine would continue to run to New Center and Pontiac, and Amtrak has launched a study to rebuild and improve the existing New Center station.

Ford is saving some tracks (according to the last time they spoke about it) and it's seeming likely it'll be a station for the Amtrak Toronto line.

Any work on this building that precludes its primary use being as a train station should be stopped immediately.

Many of us have not only been aware but experienced its abandoned state for decades. Amtrak failed it, govt failed this building. Ford is the savior to this historic edifice. They are doing an impressive renovation. It will accommodate trains in the future, but this is no Chicago union station as a hub of national rail service. It would be unused and neglected if the primary use was trains. And I’m someone who only takes the train to Detroit and would benefit from that. Everyone knows the best use of the station and surrounding buildings is commercial.

Why should we loose a gem to decay? I veto your stop work motion.

I'm not saying leave it abandoned, I'm saying turn it into a train station first then whatever other things after that ... restore it as part of the Chicago-Detroit-Toronto expanded Wolverine Line as the main priority.

Being a station is just not happening right now this moment. Why would we wait to restore it? They're keeping certain things so that it can be a station again in the future.

Bringing passenger traffic back here is really up to Amtrak and the federal government. No reason the city should wait on them.

Outstanding. Gorgeous. Wonderful it has been restored.

The irony will never be lost though that a temple of rail travel will have been saved and operated by the ones that were partially responsible for destroying it.
