(what I do in flickr is click on the 'share' arrow in the lower-right corner when viewing the pic in photostream, then choose 'BBC Code', and copy and paste the string it gives you into the forum comment window)

Construction on massive Mid-Market condo and hotel complex moves ahead
By Emily Hoeven – Editorial Intern, San Francisco Business Times
Oct 23, 2018, 9:48pm PDT Updated 10 hours ago

Developer Group I is moving ahead on its long-delayed $350 million hotel and condo project at 950 Market St. that could help transform the struggling Mid-Market neighborhood.

A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Thursday. Group I scored an investor for the project, Taiwan-based Continental Development Corp., according to Supervisor Jane Kim's office.

Continental Development Corp. is a subsidiary of Continental Holdings Corp., which has developments across Taiwan, Malaysia, India and the Middle East and nearly $1 billion in annual revenue.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed, Supervisor Jane Kim, and Joy Ou, the president and CEO of Group I, are slated to speak at the groundbreaking. Group I did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

The Business Times reported in June 2017 that the 13-story building, which includes 232 hotel rooms, 247 condos, 13,000 square feet of retail and 2,000 square feet of community space, would cost around $350 million to develop. The Taipei Times reported that the investment will cost Continental around $367 million, but is expected to generate $524 million in revenue by 2020 . . . .

It took three years to obtain approvals, and negotiations with the community over building heights, design, environmental regulations, affordable housing and historic preservation took another year and a half. Another major setback came in July 2018 when New York-based Standard Hotels, which had originally signed on to operate the hotel, backed out of the deal, leaving Group I without a hotel operator.

To keep momentum going along the way, Group I agreed to slash the building’s height from 200 to 120 feet, paid $18.8 million to buy the land at 189 Jones St. to fund an affordable housing project and contributed $300,000 to a city fund to support a transgender community center, LGBTQ historic sites and local businesses. It is also leasing a 2,000-square-foot space in the project to the Magic Theatre for free . . . .

Despite the setbacks, Group I moved ahead with demolition work. Construction permits for the building were approved in December 2017, according to city records. Bovis Lend Lease is building the project, which was designed by Handel Architects . . . .

I'm assuming this is the same as 950 Market. I get confused with all the addresses on Mid-Market where something is happening (and that's a good thing).

Some progress finally for 490 South Van Ness. The last remnants of the former service station are gone and excavation is under way.

All of the above: 950-974 Market.

Also, the Fast Frame on Market has recently moved into the space next door and scaffolding has just started to go up around its old building, so hopefully we might see progress on that site soon.

It would have been something if Trinity Plaza had incorporated an entrance directly off Civic Center station. With proper security, it could have helped a lot to increase safety and cleanliness in the station, and also to have provided a little retail for space so people could get drinks or whatever without leaving the station.

The boutique hotelier has signed on to a major Mid-Market development

A branch of the LINE Hotel, the chic boutique hotel chain that operates in LA, DC, and Austin, is coming to San Francisco at 950 Market Street. The Chronicle reports that Sydell Group, which manages other trendy hotel brands the NoMad and the Freehand, has signed on to a major forthcoming housing and hotel project from developer Group I. That development is already a decade in the making at 950-974 Market Street, and it’s now scheduled to arrive in fall 2020.

Bjarke Ingels Group and Handel Architects, which designed the building, are behind the 236-room hotel design. The LINE will include a ground-level bar and restaurant plus a nightclub and a rooftop bar.

. . . The Line hotels are “shaped and inspired by the unique neighborhoods we are a part of,” incorporating aspects of the community’s history and culture into its design, according to the brand’s website.

Ou said that the hotel will include a basement nightclub, two ground floor restaurants — one of which will be a "smaller intimate dining area" — and a rooftop bar, which will also serve bar food. She expects to choose a chef within the next six months, and wants the chef to be local. She added that Group I is also considering another restaurant tenant for one of the building's retail spaces.

"We want guests to have a choice" of where to eat, Ou said.

Construction has officially started at the Mid-Market site, and Ou said she expects the building be “out of the ground” by February 2019. She estimates the buildout will last through the fourth quarter of 2020.

Prisidio Knolls Bilingual School

The 200 block of 10th Street is going to be much nicer looking when this one is completed. The drawing is from the school's web site.

I ‘m just generally saying that SF must continue to build a lot of housing for years to come to try to solve this housing crisis and try to get a lot of people off the streets. Of course, it is much easier said than done. Some good progress is being made but a lot more has to be done.

875 California St. @ Powell Street

11/02/2018 -Two views I took pictures of will disappear in a few months. This is a 44 condo development, 65 feet tall. With two cable car lines going past this building the windows will have to be sound proof! Tea cups will rattle!

^^I think the "tabletop effect" that cursed the city for so long is now pretty effectively banished but I give the Planning Department very little credit. Without them, I don't think it ever would have been the fact it was.
