The increased height is nice. Curious to see what it's going to look like when it's done, though...

Just saw this posted on Facebook from Exchange District Business Improvement Zone:

PARKING IN THE EXCHANGE 🚙
• ONE FREE hour Monday-Friday 8am-5:30pm
• FREE after 5:30pm Monday-Friday
• TWO FREE hours on Saturday
• FREE all day Sunday + holidays
• Hourly rates for Exchange District parking have recently decreased by 75¢

This certainly seems to address some concerns expressed by some business owners in the area.

That's not anything new. Always been 2 hours free on Saturday and free all days Sunday. The price decreases happened a while back, and first hour free has been in place since Covid hit, everywhere downtown.

The first hour free has been around since they started charging for parking on Saturdays.

I see a CTV News crew standing in the old Shanghai Restaurant lot on King. I wonder what that's about?

Details at 11?

CBC had a story a few days ago about "the Chinese Communities in Winnipeg, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto and Montreal calling for the creation of a national plan "to build back Canada's Chinatown's.""

They could be doing a weekend news filler on this as the remaining Chinese owned businesses in Winnipeg Chinatown are complaining that nobody comes there now and most Chinese people go to the new stores and services in south Winnipeg.

Its gotta be blank and non combustible. It's built right up to the property line.

Hopefully some day the owner of the parking lot will build something there and it wont be visible.

I know... My favourite big, blank wall is the tower on Portage at Smith.

I don't mind it at all. Cities have buildings with blank walls in expectation that something will get built next to them. The problem is not the blank wall, the problem is the lack of a building next door to fully cover it up.

As a kid I always wondered about it. I actually like that building, whatever it's called. I call it the Canada building because it either does or used to house government offices I assume. The black curvy glass is nice.

The Department of Canadian Heritage had an office in the storefront space in the mid 90s to early 00s... that may be what you're thinking of. I always found it kind of weird that they couldn't find a decent tenant for that storefront CRU since the feds left.

Always thought it was a pretty nice building in general, although according to business reporters it has been tough to lease out as office space in recent years due to the small floorplates.

The building on Portage with the large blank wall is the Kensington Building:

Kensington tower...it is depressing, such a contrast from gleaming to prison wall.

Interesting:

Seven Oaks School Division plans to open new Met School in Winnipeg's Exchange District

Quote:
The new campus Seven Oaks plans on opening will be located somewhere in Winnipeg's Exchange District, and will be a satellite campus for West Kildonan Collegiate, a high school near the Rivergrove neighbourhood.

The exact location is yet to be determined, but it would be near what is called Innovation Alley in the west part of the Exchange, said Henderson.

It will be interesting to see where they end up putting it and how big it will be.
