This thread is amazing. I'll be in Houston for the first time this weekend and have added like 2 places to my itinerary just from seeing them here (had never heard of the Rienzi!).

At least the 747 beneath it is the genuine article! I like the elevator access structure too.

One afternoon, some thirty or more years ago, I stepped out the back of the business in the Montrose area where I was working, and that 747 with a (real) Shuttle on top flew over at a low altitude. I had no idea it was in town... most likely on a ferrying trip between California and Florida... but felt incredibly luck to have chosen that moment to go outside.

Did you survive your first trip to Houston? You were a week early...we just had our first real cool front of the fall.

The original completion date for the Houston Museum of Natural Science is incorrect. I know Wikipedia says 1969, but the Museum’s website and even the sources sited in the Wikipedia article all have 1964 as the original completion date. I looked it up because I remember my older sister going to the planetarium with her school and I knew ‘69 had to be wrong because our family moved away from Houston in 1966.
