The surface parking is not actually a significant amount of parking for a project of this size and they seem to be indicating underground parking as well. I suspect the reason for the mid block parking is they want to attract a large retailer (probably a grocery store) who wants visible convenient parking at their front door. Unfortunately this tends to flip the layout of the whole store around and you end up with a design that feels like it's mooning the street with a sad, secondary pedestrian entrance on the non-parking side. i.e. Hawthorn Fred Meyer

It will be very interesting to see how this is developed. It appears there was some recent traction for a new grocery store nearby too..

I didn't expect the Grand Ave Mixed Use project to be so visible.

East Burnside is really developing quite an interesting little skyline. I really hope it keeps growing, even though zoning only really allows for buildings to go as tall as the Yard.

Running freeways through the center of a city was really a bad idea. The eastside of downtown would look so different without it.

Except if you're ODOT, who were planning on widening the freeway over the Esplanade, as part of the I-5 Rose Quarter expansion project. They had to cancel that idea, because they forgot to disclose it in their Environmental Assessment, which is a pretty big error under National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).

Or bury it under ground like some other Cities have done (Boston's big dig, Seattle's Alaskan Way Viaduct & portion of I-5).

My first thought upon seeing that photo. Easy to imagine what the fruits of such an endeavor would be; harder to imagine shifting the powers-that-be that stand in the way, especially given our current condition as a city, our mayor, and the outrageous expansion plans.

Isn't ODOT still planning to widen I-5 through the Rose Quarter?

Is that a done deal? Or still up in the air? Maybe it’ll be cancelled

Drawings [4 MB] for YBP Ankeny (site of the previous Ankeny Apartments, which were denied by the Design Commission before being approved by the City Council).

This design does look much better, and a simple infill. If I was just moving to Portland in my 20s, I would have totally been cool with living in one of these tiny studios since it is basically what I had when I lived on the edge of downtown for years.
