Perimeter/Gunn Rd lights are installed and running.

Spend $250m on an interchange, install two new set of lights 2km and 8km away - the MB way of infrastructure.

Don’t forget they built 59/101 than added lights at wenzel. Now they are building the st Mary’s interchange and oh now a light at Gunn. This province is so ass backwards it’s just a disgrace.

Everyone needs to drive to Regina to see how a real free flowing bypass is done!

By the time M.I.T. finalizes the proposal, MTO will probably finalize phase 2 of TCH twinning between provincial border and Kenora.

Let's be honest here. If we roll back to the early 90s when the northeast Perimeter was being built Gunn Rd should have had lights installed from day 1 so the reason change is just 30 years over due. At the time the plan was to quickly follow up the northeast Perimeter with a handful of related projects. The first was to be 101/59N interchange and they even managed to get a "temporary" construction detours in place before that flood happened. The second project was to be the HWY 15 relocation, aka the Oakbank Corridor which would have included an interchange at approximately Gunn Rd. Public consultations had started on that project but the flood ended up killing the follow up projects. The third project, after the Oakbank Corridor would have been the Dugald and 101 grade separation. As HWY 15 was going to be relocated the traffic currently at 15 and 101 would be significantly different and allow for some direction flows such as west to north to not be offered there due to challenging site logistics.

So adding the light at Gunn Rd both makes sense based on the current status and actually has a lot more history behind it.

History aside, if it deserves lights, it needs to be grade separated, period.

Ya we all know it's stupid. So does MTI. But really it should have been done decades ago as was mentioned. Well the interchange should've been done but ya we know..

No disagreement there but the cost of the Gunn Rd interchange is going to be very high. First it need to be a full interchange as it will be the site the inner ring road network and the Perimeter connect in the northeast. Then add in that the route needs an added net new bridge over the floodway.

Even if you push the east side over the floodway and they connect it to 207 as an interim move that seems fairly short sited and not worth the costs involved. That is without considering that 207 and this extension would themselves need a grade separation with the east-west route not stopping and 207 being controlled diamond access with left turns.

So until either CPT hits the east Perimeter or the HWY 15 relocation project gains momentum again Gunn Rd and the Perimeter is going to have traffic lights.

I disagree on the full interchange unless shovels go into the ground tomorrow on the oak bank corridor. Simple diamond, when they’re ready to put money into the new road we can talk. Leaving a set of lights there in hope of a project that has no commitment in terms of money is not tenable.

Agreed. It could be decades before those roads CoryB mentioned link up with Gunn Rd. However, there has been a need for an interchange there for quite some time.

The story of highways in the the Winnipeg area is letting perfect always be the enemy of the good.

The land is there. They could build something that is planned for a future floodway crossing.

Yeah not opposed to setting land aside for a future upgrade or even configuring the first one to be somewhat upgradable, that said, they didn't keep a single part of the 101/59 interchange that was already there, so I don't think that it would matter if we build the simplest cheapest thing possible today.

The projects you talk about are unfortunately way lower on the priority order in this province.

Every single light-controlled intersection on Perimeter plus Elie and Deacons on Hwy 1 see more daily traffic than Gunn/101.

CPT is decades out, they haven't even moved on phase 1 of the West extension, nevermind all the way to route 90. That plan has been collecting dust for several years now with no indication Winnipeg act on that in the next few years.

The province is also showing the Oakbank corridor is not a high priority as they are looking at safety improvements for HWY 15 rather than building the new highway.

So there's no reason to believe Gunn will suddenly be jumped up the queue in importance given that neither of those projects will happen in our lifetimes.

If the province finally picks off the other more important light-controlled intersections and Gunn gets it time in the limelight then it will likely be a basic diamond/parclo interchange implemented, with accommodations for cheap/quick upgrades to the interchange if needed. Much like how Centreport/101 was built with earth ramps for the eventual Headingley bypass. Calgary and Edmonton has a bunch of those on their ring roads where the built-up part of their cities hadn't reached the roadway when the highway was constructed.

FWIW part of Gillinghams platform was CPT extension "tenders done and work proceeding by 2026".

The ultimate design with all interchanges has to be switched to the current initial stage seeing the original proposal is from almost a decade ago. The area has grown substantially in the past couple years. There isn’t room for half assing a project anymore.

West, not east. To McPhillips or Brookside.

MB Govt release today:

March 13, 2023
MULTI-YEAR INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENT STRATEGY
DETAILS PLANNED HIGHWAY, WATER CONTROL, NORTHERN AIRPORT CAPITAL PROJECTS
- - -
Initiatives Build On Transportation and Trade Gateways to
Ensure Manitobans Safe, Sustainable Infrastructure: Piwniuk

Manitobans will soon be able to travel to Ontario on four-lane highways and travel the Perimeter Highway without stopping as part of a $4.1-billion, multi-year infrastructure strategy, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Doyle Piwniuk announced today.

The massive plan details more than 800 approved capital projects planned for the next five years to improve provincial highway, water control and northern airport assets throughout the province. It includes over $2.5 billion for highway infrastructure including $560 million to improve Manitoba’s key trade and commerce routes grid and nearly $280 million to upgrade Winnipeg’s Perimeter Highway to freeway standards. Once complete, this initiative will improve safety by adding interchanges and overpasses at all roadways and railway crossings.

“The Manitoba government continues taking concrete action to improve the safe and free flow of people and goods throughout this province,” said Piwniuk. “We continue to grow Manitoba as a transportation hub that provides industry better trade access to markets and supports investment in trade-based industries.”

In all, the plan itemizes:

• 525 highways projects including 1,862 kilometres of Manitoba highways to be upgraded
• 97 projects to enhance bridges and structures throughout Manitoba;
• more than $115 million to upgrade PTH 5 from PTH 23 to the Trans-Canada Highway to support economic growth in the region and remove spring loading restrictions;
• $40 million in upgrades to PTH 6, one of Manitoba’s busiest northern highways;
$151 million for the construction of a new interchange on the South Perimeter Highway (PTH 100) at St. Anne’s Road, bringing the total to three major interchange projects on the South Perimeter Highway including the project already under construction at St. Mary’s Road and the planned interchange at McGillivray Boulevard;
• more than $60 million to upgrade PTH 75;
• more than $57 million to replace the Symington Yards overpass east of Winnipeg;
• 214 water-related projects including the proposed $600-million Lake Manitoba and Lake St. Martin Outlet Channels;
• more than $75 million invested in northern airports including two new airport terminal buildings and approximately 150,000 square metres of runway repairs;
• six major twinning projects, which will provide 71 km of newly twinned highway; and
• 116 culvert replacements due to the 2022 spring flood.

These investments also build on previously announced projects such as the $40-million investment to better service CentrePort and $74 million to build a northern corridor to the Port of Churchill to export resources such as liquefied natural gas to reflect Manitoba government’s goal of making Manitoba an inter-continental trade gateway, the minister noted.

In 2018, ON liberals promised twinning all of TCH in Ontario too. That didn’t get them anywhere.
