Construction updates

Erie News Now highlighted the progress made on several construction projects happening downtown.

In regards to the new EDDC building at 5th and State: "30 apartments are currently being constructed and several of them have already been claimed. They're set to open at the end of spring, in addition to that, the ASCEND Rock Climbing Gym is set to open at the end of the summer."

Lavery Brewing Company's expansion is also coming along and should be completed by the end of March. "The projects includes doubling the Brewery's seating, from 64 to 110, a larger kitchen and moving the bar to give the space a new look."

Also, a rendering of Erie Insurance's home office with a new glass façade was provided:

Some other updates that weren't mentioned:

Work continues on Richford Arms, the new HQ for ValuMomentum at 11th and State, and the old Citizens Bank building at 12th and State.

The EDDC parking garage at 5th and Peach is open, even as the outer shell is still being constructed.

And progress on the children's museum expansion can be viewed here: https://mds.multivista.com/index.cfm...-wr5X3lLiFzt6Q

State Street streetscape project to be completed by early 2024

The below article is low on details but it seems State Street from 12th tp 2nd will be getting some functional and aesthetic upgrades this year, including:

- New concrete curbs
- Decorative LED lighting with new light poles
- Soil cells, which are used for sediment control and better future tree health
- Expanded green space, which will be strips of grass along the curb

I was driving down State Street this afternoon and noticed that 408 State Street (where Scully's Pub used to be) was getting a totally new glass facade. Not sure if any new business is moving in there or not, but it will look nice regardless.

Honestly that whole stretch of State has been completely transformed from where it was even a year ago, between the EDDC projects, Richford Arms renovation, and a few other smaller things.

These huge changes coupled with the children's museum expansion, State Street streetscape plans, and projects down by 12th Street, really bode well for Downtown Erie.

Downtown is really starting to feel like the center of a "city" with all this new stuff.

Hopefully, infill projects follow soon as lower downtown still has it's fair share of surface lots. I also hope to see some more progress on Harbor Place and Bayfront Place as well.

^ Yeah, there really seems to be a new feeling of life down there. Still has a way to go, but major improvement over 5 years ago.

Bad news and good news for Erie International Airport as United has announced they are ending service from Erie to Chicago-O'Hare in June. This leaves only American Airlines' 2x daily flights to Charlotte.

A few days after this announcement, the Erie Chamber of Commerce said a ULCC was looking into starting 2x weekly, 180-seat flights from Erie to destinations in Florida. The carrier wasn't named but it is assumed to be either Allegiant or Avelo Airlines.

I'm honestly surprised at United's exit out of Erie as they just increased the size of the planes they were flying into the airport because they were pleased with the numbers. But an LCC at Erie Airport would be a good addition as long as people support it.

Makes sense since so many people in Erie migrate down to Florida during the winter and vacation there.

Personally I had always hoped they would follow through with the rumored direct flights to Newark/NYC. That 12-14 hour Amtrak ride to the Big Apple is brutal.

AA has a huge hub in ORD/Chicago and could pick up the slack if they have aircraft/pilots to handle to additional flights. This would work well with anything west of Chicago & NW US + good int'l heading to Asia.

AA flights are packed heading to CLT / Florida & SW US

I think possibly a Jet Blue to LGA/NYC for near East coast & connect to Europe & beyond through JFK would work.

There is also a "puddle jumper" flight from PIT to JMW (Jamestown NY) provided by Southern Airlines.
Southern Air could connect ERI to PIT. While not a hub PIT has about 15/20 direct flights to other cities/hubs
and who knows with PIT current construction on new terminal on going.

Harbor Place mini-golf course to open by summer

Looks like the bayfront lost a mini-golf course not too long ago, only to get one back soon.

Scott Enterprises is building a mini-golf course between Oliver's Beer Garden and the east marina on Dobbins Landing. The course will have a "Battle of Lake Erie" theme and should be open by the summer.

I'd probably be more excited if it weren't being done by Scott Enterprises and if they actually took the time to build it right. Not just rush through something to fill up space.

Leave it to Scott Enterprises to cheapen things up.

I'm hoping we can get an Applebee's and maybe some go-karts down there too on that prime waterfront land!

The sad part is that Applebee's or a chain would probably be better than any of their "original concept" restaurants or whatever they call them. Hooch & Blotto's bit the dust, Oliver's has a great atmosphere but mediocre food and Bistro 210 at the Peak is okay but very overpriced.

Budget motel franchisees, that's what they are -- and it still shows. It's all about getting every last cent, by offering low-to-middling quality in return.

It's fully apparent in an establishment like Oliver's. The execution always leaves the feeling of wanting for something better. Promote the restaurant as higher-end fine dining, even though the fare is not. Promote the views of the Bay, but situate the bar area so that it blocks a significant portion of said view.

The whole development is confused because they don't know how to do something of higher quality. They can't show any type of restraint because they feel they need to get every last f'ing cent out of their projects, from every single demographic. It results in schlocky, low-class excess.

"High-end" restaurant and bar called Oliver's... but put it on the top of a budget Hampton Inn. And then offer a "casual" alternative to your "expensive" dining option and open up a Beer Garden with the same Oliver's name down on the water with food trucks, picnic tables, fire pits, cornhole, and country music... but don't actually put it on the water. Situate it at an awkward angle that takes up more space and then fence it in. And now, put a mini-golf course on the water in front of the beer garden.

High-end waterfront restaurant... food trucks... mini-golf... maybe even a zip-line ride. All of their developments attempt to cater to a very average demographic.

Cool news. Good win for Erie.

Artist in Residence Distillerie out of Gatineau, Quebec has purchased land and is planning to open a distillery in Harborcreek at the Station Rd. & I-90 interchange.

Canadian company proposes distillery, restaurant in Harborcreek

https://www.goerie.com/story/news/lo...d/70108657007/

A new distillery, restaurant and tasting room could be coming to Harborcreek Township soon.

The Harborcreek Township Planning Commission on Thursday evening will take a first look at a preliminary land development plan from Artist in Residence Distillerie. The Quebec-based company intends to build the restaurant, plus manufacturing facilities and warehouses, at 6100 Station Road, south of Interstate 90 near the Station Road interchange, according to the land development plan.

A Canadian company called Mantha Corporation wants to build Artist In Residence Distillerie on the site, expanding from two Canadian properties.
The proposed five-building development would include two warehouses, two manufacturing buildings and a restaurant.

Artist in Residence is based in Gatineau, Quebec, where the company operates its first distillery. A second facility is under construction in Hawkesbury, Ontario, near Ottawa, and is expected to begin production this summer.

Artist in Residence founder and President Pierre Mantha told the Ottawa Citizen in June that he plans to build a third distillery in Canada, five in the U.S. and one each in Mexico and Colombia. The Harborcreek distillery would be the company's first outside Canada.

Artist in Residence has indicated that the Harborcreek facility will be identical to the $40 million Hawkesbury, Ontario, distillery, Pepicello said.

The Harborcreek development plan includes 18,000-square-foot and 34,500-square-foot manufacturing buildings; 31,000 square-foot and 20,000 square-foot warehouses; and a 7,200-square foot restaurant with tasting room and liquor shop.

The distillery will be distinctive, he said, including an entrance from Station Road lined with lighted trees.

"I want it to be an experience. This will not by a typical, normal distillery," Mantha said. "It will be an all-glass building. It will be cool, modern, a different kind of distillery."

Downtown building to get makeover, new use

From the article:

"Whiting said he plans to transform the exterior and interior of the building and open a golf simulator business with a bar that's fully licensed with a kitchen.

The family-friendly space would house up to nine different simulators."

The hope is to have the project ready to go by the fall, no word on the fate of the businesses that are currently located in the building, though.

Scott Enterprises posted some photos of their Bayfront mini golf course. My expectations were low and this honestly looks like the cheapest, most half assed mini golf course I have ever seen.

Have they never seen courses like Pop Stroke? Do they not remember how nice Harbor View was? I don't even think this is worth the $10 they will charge people to play.

Glad to see the former Epp Furniture building's art deco glass block facade lit up. Seems like the new owner and his FEED media art center are really helpting to bring this section of downtown back to life.
