Calgary's number for 2019 was 1,285,711 - I was just under a thousand shy.

About right given the economy and number of people moving to Kelowna these days.

Doug_Cgy was closer at 977,742, but 240glt bid $1 so he wins.

So approximately 1.5 to 2 years to top 1million at the current rate.

Some interesting numbers in here for anyone who wants to review. Some neighborhoods posted some significant gains, some stagnated and some lost population since 2016

I was SOOOO close! Damn those Price is Right rules

Is the census continuing every 3 years? Or are they changing to annual now? I thought I heard that was the case, but could be wrong.

This CBC article linked below mentions something quite interesting - if the COE used the same formula used by Stats Canada for its federal census, the population would end up as 992,812 (official 972,223). Not only a lot closer to the 1M mark, but also that's a difference of 20,589. That's a little larger than either Beaumont or Spruce Grove. It's important to know that this census (and likely also past ones) only takes into account census forms which were completed and submitted.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmon...ince-1.5271704

Personally, I didn't expect the City of Edmonton proper would reach the 1M mark anyway. I was thinking roughly between 975,000 - 985,000, so that's a little less what I expected, but not hugely so. As to when, well, that's a little hard to say, but I'd definitely bet within 2-2.5 years.

Unless the Trans Mountain pipeline gets axed and/or the oil/gas industry gets hit big time by investors unloading even more (look what's happening to the oilsands) or a major oil price drop, I think the city proper will surpass the 1M mark before the 2021 federal census.

I've already been here for one winter, took several days off for mental health reasons (SADS). I'm shopping for a nice winter jacket so I can get out more.

I'm heading in Kelowna in a couple of weeks to see friends and look for office space. I started a company earlier this year and have plans to open an office and hire staff there in the next 6 months. Part time to start.

Great to see Edmonton growing. I believe The actual Edmonton population would be over 1 million if they take into account people similar to three of my renters who live in BC but work full time in Edmonton and are here 8 months of the year but only fill out there BC census or a person like my brother who lives near Red Deer but has a place in Edmonton spending the majority of his time here but once again did not do the Edmonton census.

Interesting projection from stats can. If oil and gas are sunset industries where will the growth come from?
