Such a policy is vastly superior to just subsidizing new vehicles not only economically but also environmentally.

By changing your car to EV from ICE, doesn't mean new/recycled steel which id done by coal or natural gas and distribution of the vehicles by oil. More importantly it will get millions of people into the EV market who could not afford to be there if they can't buy new. This would REALLY increase supply in for all regardless of socio-economic status. Also people who use heavily used cars tend to be of lower incomes and the older the cars, the more polluting so you would be getting the most polluting vehicles off the road faster.
If you want to flood the market with used EV the best solution is to create a subsidy for car rental companies to get EV. They usually hold on to the for a year or two at the most then flip them.

Makes me wonder if it's partly that most contemporary cars have been FWD for decades with many Teslas being RWD which people have gotten out of practice with.

The used EV market isn’t going to be an affordable option unless there’s an increase in supply of new cars. Used cars have been selling for more than new ones for several months now. A used base model Y goes for nearly twice the price of a new one.

The good news is production is growing fast. Tesla delivered 936,172 vehicles in 2021, up from 499,550 in 2020. That's a staggering 87% growth in a single year.

The car industry is going to look very different by the end of the decade.

EV conversions doesn't require NEW car sales...........people don't keep their used cars because they like more polluting vehicles that cost them an increasing amount of maintenance and repair. They keep them for only one reason............they can't afford to buy a new one. Conversions subsidized by Ottawa at the same rate as new EV car sales doesn't require even a buying a used car so their rising prices doesn't effect those millions of car owners.

BEV conversions are expensive. Its a niche hobbyist market and not really something the government should be involved in. TBH, we should probably get rid of all BEV incentives since they seem to be selling well enough on their own.

I saw a Model 3 spinning stuck on a street in Waterloo a few days ago: I kept driving, not going to kill my back pushing 4000lbs around ha. (Isn't lighter weight better in snow?)

The labour and parts involved in this makes it a non-starter. Not to mention the engineering involved to have kits for virtually every car out there.

Go ask your local mechanic how much they would have charge to rip out the entire drivetrain and fit in a custom built battery and motor kit. You'll quickly learn why nobody thinks this is a good idea for anything but very exotic cars.

Going god, why? Why pay more for a dumpy used EV soccer-mom mobile than a new one?

Probably because they can't get the new ones due to the shortage so there's nothing there to pay more for.

Man blows up his Tesla rather than paying $22K to repair it

What would make a driver mad enough to dynamite his own Tesla? How about a $22,600 repair bill. CNN's Jeanne Moos has the explosive report. Source: CNN

CA$119k for the retail model is hard to swallow. And their fleet customers have bought out the first two years of the cheaper work truck model. This is basically an introduction for a model most regular folks won't have access to, until 2024.

Electric cars will not be environmentally friendly until we can find a way to properly recycle those Lithium batteries.

Tesla claims they recycle all of their batteries and none of their old batteries end up in a landfill. So not sure why that BBC article didn't mention that. Probably why Tesla was never mentioned at all in the article, it would be counter productive to the point they are trying to make.

They are also moving to LFP batteries which are more stable, way cheaper to recycle and last much longer.

I would be wary about Tesla's claim, we all were duped into believing that single use plastics were being recycled when they were in fact being shipped away to poor countries.

The midgate is a pretty neat feature. Doesn't look bad overall, but GM is having major issues right now with their batteries. We'll see if their new Ultium batteries are any better. With their latest major setback, I'd avoid all GM EV products for the next 5-10 years until they prove their reliability.

This creates lots of well paying jobs where they are needed.... in the cities.

It's a good idea that needs further investigation.

There's very little in terms of human consumption that's environmentally "friendly". To survive in large numbers as a technological society is going to take a toll on the environment. The question is whether or not one option poses a smaller environmental toll than another and whether or not the earth can sustain the overall toll being placed on it. I think it's clear that despite the problems posed by EVs, they pose less of a problem than ICE vehicles, but the wide scale production and use of any large machine isn't good for the environment and should be avoided as much as possible. That's why walking and biking more is still the best option.
