Around the same time (1946) there was a place on Cahuenga called the Palace Gardens Barbecue. It was located at the top of the Cahuenga Pass. I have not been able to find an address or photo. Anyone know anything about it?

Would this have been before the Hollywood Freeway (101) was built through the pass? If it was just the road (Cahuenga), maybe there would have been room to build the place you describe. Maybe the freeway construction killed the project??? Or maybe the project was closer to the bottom of the pass on the Hollywood side or Valley side??? The "plans" look very preliminary. Not an actual finished plan. Maybe someone's dream that never materialized. Maybe somebody can find a digitized phone book page from that period to see if there was a listing for this place with an address. Martin Pal knows how to do this. Of course the name could have been changed to something other than Palace Gardens BBQ. If so, we're at a dead end.

Reply to RICHKAY on Silverlake and Sunset photos, Thanks for further photos. I did forget Club Zarape but remembered this morning about it. If I remember right there was a clock in the tower above Zarape. One of the the owners had lived on Westerly Terrace and was murdered in front of his house in the 50's by the way.

Thanks for the input. I don't know on which side of the hill the restaurant was located. It did exist and if I had a reverse telephone book for 1946 I could go through the street addresses on the Hollywood and Valley side. I have looked for the Palace BBQ in the 1946 yellow pages and white pages, but can't find the restaurant.

The height of the McCarthy era. Look at those baggy pants on the men. My parents debated whether to put in a bomb shelter, but decided it would be pointless. In my elementary school we had weekly "duck and cover" drills. I thought they were pointless, but the teacher said we had to do them. That broadcasting school above the market looks pretty questionable. I wonder how many graduates landed jobs?

What a sweet and most charming Nuclear bomb shelter. The flowers all neat and proper around the top/with grass and easy access steps. I have a picture of a mother in that bomb shelter wearing her pearl necklace.

Notice the lady entering the shelter...yes, those were the days of fur wraps....many even had parts of the animal sewn into the display, such as the head and feet. My aunt had one in the 1950's, I thought it was interesting but strange.

And boys after "Davy Crockett" aired on the Disneyland T.V. show in '55 wore raccoon hats with a dangling tail. I do believe Davy had one with the head still on. I had a Davy hat. Fess Parker got to play Davy and later Dan'l Boone. Quite the mountain man. Later he grew wine grapes and had a winery near Santa Barbara. I believe the guy who played Jedd Clampett on the Bev. Hillbillies played Davy sidekick Jim Bowie, the big knife guy. John Wayne played Davy in "The Alamo". I think he wore a raccoon hat, but still had the John Wayne walk and voice. Wayne was always Wayne no matter who he played.

Martin Pal's above post of the 1947 phone directory shows the dance place was then Club Zarape.



















By July '74 the tower had been partially removed (an online building permit indicates it had been damaged in the '71 quake).....











When Ruscha returned to the intersection in Aug. 1975 the east side of the building and most of the 2nd floor, and the tower, were in the process of demolition....

























The "bones" of the west side of the building and a small portion of the 2nd floor (and the awning) go back to the original construction....

On the marquee, we see Rene Bloch and His Orchestra. Bloch was known known for his Space Age Pop stylings. Not on the level of say, Esquivel... but he had a good career.
Amazingly, I believe Rene (born in 1925) is still alive in 2020.

The bomb shelter era was also the era of the uranium prospecting craze. People would buy geiger counters and go out to the Mohave or Nevada or Utah desert and try to find uranium deposits and strike it rich. My dad bought a geiger and went out into the Mohave but just got a bad sunburn. The craze fizzled out quickly since so few found anything. Pop would have done better panning for gold, but uranium seemed more patriotic. The '50s were a strange time, but now is even stranger I guess.

In the distance in the bomb shelter pic there is a sign that says "Schlitz, the beer that made Milwaukee famous". Did it really? When I lived in Van Nuys as a boy there used to be a big Schlitz brewery just off Woodman near our house. Did Schlitz make Van Nuys famous? Doubt it.

Interesting, CaliNative - the spelling I've always known is Mojave. I've never seen the word spelled with an H before. But according to Wikipedia, either spelling can be used.

The spelling Mojave originates from the Spanish language while the spelling Mohave comes from modern English. Both are used today, although the Mojave Tribal Nation officially uses the spelling Mojave

Not found anything more yet about the Palace Gardens Barbecue location, but speaking of her, on the Elizabeth Short in Hollywood website, Chapter 2 - The Hawthorne Hotel Crowd, the place is mentioned: LINK

(Hawthorne Hotel at 1611 North Orange Drive, just behind the Roosevelt Hotel on Hollywood boulevard.)

"Several of the girls at the Hawthorne worked at the Palace Garden Barbecue, where Lynn was a waitress."

This was in 1946.

Must have been on "Laugh In". Can't imagine anywhere else where Wayne would don a bunny suit, except MAYBE the Dean Martin or Carol Burnett show. Nixon even appeared on Laugh In in 1968 before he won the election and clumsily said "sock it to me?" I guess he thought it would gain him votes. Maybe it did. Laugh In was big in '68.

Mohave is definitely becoming the more common spelling. Wasn't Texas once spelled Tejas?
