I believe these are the current numbers for the biggest cities in central Canada:

Toronto 6
Ottawa 4
Montréal 2

A bit on the high side for Ottawa.

Apologies if there is a more appropriate thread to post this:

http://https://globalnews.ca/news/9522317/reduced-sentence-moncton-rcmp-killer-justin-bourque/

So I guess these officers lives are only worth 8 years & 4 months.

25 years each - the sentences are concurrent, not consecutive.

^That’s my point - the NB High Court ruled the consecutive sentence unconstitutional based on a Supreme Court ruling in another case.
My question is why are consecutive sentences unconstitutional when someone commits multiple murders ?

^ the Supreme Court of Canada squashed the consecutive sentences in the Quebec mosque shooter sentence, which then affects all the other greater than 25 year sentences handed down in last several years in the rest of the country. Apparently this decision is based on an interpretation of the Canadian Constitution. Seems like if the public want these 50 or 75 year sentences in Canada, it's gonna be a bit of a complicated battle.

Just so everyone is clear, this is the period with which they ineligible for parole. The original sentence stands. The supreme court was in effect saying that there is a chance for prisoners to become better people and consecutive not concurrent parole periods is what is unjust. In 25 years, parole will come up and I doubt there is much chance they are paroled at that time, he is still in for a life sentence and that would more than likely factor in to any decision.

I would be stunned if he is paroled anytime before he is more than seventy years old.

Supreme Court rulings and bills introduced by the government have been steadily chipping away at harsher sentencing and stuff like no-bail provisions for repeat offenders over the past couple of years. It's a pretty clear trend.

A quick search of news articles shows it's a phenomenon that is observed throughout most of the western world.

What you're referring to are many of the Harper-era tough-on-crime laws which the courts are slowly deeming to be unconstitutional.

Repeat offenders that have been released for some reason committing new crimes, usually violent.

Laws, it should be noted, that the Harper government almost certainly knew would not withstand a Charter challenge—a calculated attempt to stoke outrage at so-called activist judges, thereby "proving" that particular Conservative talking point as valid.

Not a murder yet, and hopefully won't be, though the child is still in hospital. A group of students at Prince of Wales Collegiate attacked a fellow student with bats and an axe, on the front steps of the school.

Quote:
A teenager has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault in connection with an attack at a St. John’s high school that left another boy with serious head injuries.

The RNC says the accused is one of a group of people involved in the targeted attack that occurred outside Prince of Wales Collegiate shortly before noon yesterday.

Quote:
Cadigan says it’s vital that investigators have as much current information as possible and he encourages those afraid of getting involved to contact Crime Stoppers to provide information anonymously.

Police are seeking any surveillance images or video from a wide area that includes Paton Street, Elizabeth Avenue from Westerland Road to Freshwater Road, Anderson Avenue, Stabb Court, Keegan Court, Cowperthwaite Court, and Mitchell Court.

Police are releasing few other details to protect the integrity of the evidence and witness accounts.

(All those Courts in the list of streets are a rough neighbourhood with trashy locals and a handful of struggling newcomers, mostly from Colombia and Belize, who are just trying to get a leg up.)

Winnipeg is now at 6 homicides this year. This last one a couple of days ago is really sad considering the age of the victim.

Teen shot, killed on Amherst Street in Winnipeg: police
A teenage boy is dead and another is recovering following a shooting on a St. James street early Monday.

Police say two male victims, one 15 and the other 17, were found with gunshot wounds in the 200 block of Amherst Street, around 1 a.m.

2 Edmonton Police officers were killed this morning responding to a domestic dispute. The suspect may also be dead. Not something you want to wake up to.

Stress is I know a couple of cops, until the names are announced.
