I wish there were a way to tell how much of the construction in Bridgeport is Chinese versus non-Chinese. I guess names will do, but lots of times it is under LLC's

I mean, they’re basically just backwards strip malls. (See Homan/North Ave). The plaza on the corner of Ogden/Damen is a nice pedestrian gateway for hospital employees, and maybe makes outdoor seating feasible in warmer months. but they definitely still have plenty of surface parking, it’s just in back. Think of this like a suburban outlot development.

It’s unclear how the retail spaces will be laid out, but hopefully they maintain a rear (street-facing) entrance as well as an entrance by the parking.

I’m pretty sure the retail will face the plaza. The whole idea is to get hospital employees to walk there

There is some surface parking in the center of the development and by the future office buildings, but I imagine most of the parking will be in garages or street:

I just read about a new development proposed for the corner of Ashland and Lawrence, that will replace Lawrence and Ashland Auto Service.

39 units with 2 commercial units. Not bad but much better than what's there currently:

Now, if only a developer would do something with at least one of the two gas stations located at that same intersection, Ashland and Lawrence would feel much more urban and pedestrian friendly.

Anyone see the article on the front page of the Chicago Tribune a few days ago about a new Skyscraper that could rival the Trump Tower as the 2nd largest tower in the city? Supposed to be close to the tribune tower. It was in either Wednesday or Thursday's paper.

Nope - front page, nobody saw it.

Check the high rise thread. I think someone started a thread for it too - and there's probably a link to it.

Most of us don't pay much attention to things like that...

I don't think this was reported anywhere, but I just noticed a permit on 12/14/2017 to convert the 8 story building at 180 W Adams (Adams & Wells) from office to 36 residential units on floors 2 through 8. This is next to that 20 story boutique office building that is or will be going up at 185 S Wells St (former parking garage --> https://chicago.curbed.com/2017/1/30...h-wells-garage)

Along with the above, there was also a permit issued on 1/4 to convert the former L'Oreal warehouse/offices at 21st and Wabash into 43 units + retail. Right around the corner from the McCormick train stop.

Which jobs? Are you talking about the two conversions? That doesn't mean they're disappearing even in the area..it's not like there's no office vacancy even in the Loop.

In other news, this one kind of surprises me, but there is a permit for a new restaurant on 1st and 2nd floors to No. 9 Walton. The name of the permit is the guy behind Gemini Bistro and Copa di Volpe. My friend seems to think it's supposed to be a private restaurant, but who knows.

Or perhaps he means the loss of the L'Oreal R&D jobs. I believe those moved to California? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

True - they moved to Clark, New Jersey, but in 2014. Sucks, though it was only 21 employees according to the Tribune, but were given the choice if they actually wanted to move or not. So it's possible many just stayed in the Chicago area and found other jobs in the 3.5 years since this happened.

I just saw that the weird 1 story commercial building at the corner of Archer and Clark is done in Chinatown which was previously a small strip of vacant land next to the train tracks. Meet Fresh, a Taiwanese dessert chain, is in it. Looks like it opened about 3 weeks ago and already has over 60 reviews on Yelp - pretty crazy. This is pretty close to the Red Line, but still weird as you can see here:

https://www.google.com/maps/place/20...!4d-87.6301614

Hopefully the retail place with 40+ micro commercial units being built at 2300 S Archer will get filled up and this one too. There is supposed to be a 5 story office building on the other side of the parking lot too. Anyone know if that's happening? Hopefully it fills up with good food/shops. Same developer was pitching a 5 story complex for one of the parking lots next to the red line station, but that was 5.5 years ago.
