That makes 9 buildings under construction that are over 500 feet tall.

That # alone is equal to the current total completed buildings in Austin over 500 feet!

Yep. That'll give us 18 over 500 feet.

The situation...

Houston - 35 | +2 under construction
Dallas - 20
Austin - 9 | +9 under construction
Forth Worth - 3
San Antonio - 0

San Antonio’s Marriott Rivercenter is 546 feet. It’s a spire, which always counts.

It actually isn't really that tall. I never have been able to measure it that tall even to the spires, and it never appears level with the observation level of the Tower of the Americas, which is at 560 feet. Not only that, but I've seen the building elevations for the Grand Hyatt, and the spires atop the Marriott Rivercenter barely appear to be higher than the roof of the Grand Hyatt, especially when viewed from the Tower of the Americas up close. It's possible that 546 foot height, which I've seen thrown out there for many many years, was in error as someone reading the original elevations forgot to subtract 100 feet from the baseline number on the elevations.

Right now, if you go onto Google Earth, you can measure the building. From the East Commerce Street entrance to the top of the spires, I get 456 feet. Even from the riverwalk level west of the mall, it still only comes up as 479 feet tall. That would make it San Antonio's tallest, but not a 500 footer. The roof level is even lower than that. The main roof parapet tops out at 361 feet. That is the section of roof below where the Marriott sign is.

What I would really love is to be able to see the building elevations for it to know for sure.

Dallas will fall, no problem. We’ve got like ten proposed projects of ‘500 or more. A handful of those have to convert.

If all current proposals do get built, Austin will have a total of 29 at 500 ft or more. It would easily surpass Dallas.

What's more is that a lot of those 500 footers in Houston are not in downtown, so you could argue that we'd have the largest number of 500 footers in Texas in a single skyline. None of this is for bragging rights or beating up on other Texas cities that have done well for themselves for decades, but rather a realization of the level that we're teasing with now.

~30 of Houston’s are in downtown.

I mean, it's close, but from what I can see, of the 35 buildings Houston has over 500 feet, 7 of them are outside of downtown. There are probably more that haven't been added to SkyscraperPage's database, which also means Houston likely has more than 35 buildings over 500 feet. I would actually expect that considering how many skyscrapers are all over the place.

I swear this one started after 415 Colorado and 321 West 6th, but it sure seems to be moving along a lot faster!
