Exclamation Progress Update at New WTC, NYC (December 29th, 2010) Exclusive Special

It has been a long time I made a Progress Update video on the World Trade Center. On December 29th, 2010, I visited the site and to my surprise a lot has been done. This video features two songs from Ryan Farish's latest album, "Opus"--

- Perpetual Motion
- Vertical Horizon

Two super columns on site now. Looks like they are welding the two halves of the first one together before installing it. (The thing with the red roof is a welding genorator.)

For some scale, the track unit of the 18000 crane is 38' 9" long.

I't just started snowning here in Linden,NJ. (6:05pm) I'm headed home.

^I think the little Bobcat to the immediate right of the bottom column gives the scale quite well. Or maybe the tiny little people milling about the column being welded.

So...yeah...f'ing huge.

Looks like a mega-church in that last photo. When are they going to add the rest of the white window bracings (or whatever those are)?

According to the Port Authority, all of the steel for the Pavilion is in place. The building will be fully clad by September 11th.

OK, maybe it's not steel. I don't recall religious symbols being a part of the design. Is it just an accident?

Nice photos, by the way.

Here's another look at it again, outside to inside...

Ah, OK. Thanks. So I guess it's just one of those things, like seeing a vision in a taco. I wonder why that particular section is the only one that doesn't have diagonal steel cross bracing. Does anyone know?

The technical term for the diagonal braces is "shear frame". The building doesn't need shear frames at every column line in order to meet seismic requirements. It does need more shear frames than a tall building like #4 though because of reflection waves following back down the structure at short intervals.

A short building is actually much more vulnerable to earthquake damage than a skyscraper.
