It looks really garish and tacky. Maybe I should wait for the final verdict until this is all done,,say in ANOTHER ten years.

LOL, I haven't heard that one. But it's good to see something above ground at the site so close to what it will actually look like when completed. The rest of the site - towers 2, 3, and Calatrava's "bird" - won't be above street level until 2012. The memorial pavailion will have to do until then. The PA expects the building to be fully clad by next year's 9/11 anniversary.

The architect was trying to capture the essence of the fallen towers. At least that is my interpretation. "Crushed Bird Cage" sounds more fitting.

I don't have to see the finished building, I have seen all the prints and some renderings not in the public domain. I find the whole thing mildly disturbing and disappointing. But that is just my opinion.

I agree with Zen. This goofy, asymmetric architecture is a garish and inappropriate reference to the ruins of the twin towers.

So I guess you'd think the Holocaust Museum's resemblance of concentration camp is "garish" then too, huh? It's SUPPOSED to invoke that response - to remember. We're all just sensitive to it because it didn't happen very long ago.

I don't have a problem with the Pavilion. It could have been smaller, but that's really the only criticism I have for it. It's not supposed to be the focal point of the memorial,
so it is a little understated.

An earlier version...

And Daniel Libeskind's original vision...

All these versions suck except the current one. Even there, like NYguy said, I wouldn't mind seeing a smaller structure. The one before is an unwieldy chunk that overwhelms the memorial, and Libeskind's The Wart proposal... do I even need to say anything?

I don't hate the current design, I just wish it were more . . . . I don't know.

Pics by Sal Schiano over at WNY. Column head for the Mezzanine level . . .

. . . and the base section of said column.

Overview with the "C" section of East Box Girder in the lower center of the frame.

Minus the Tridents, I don’t think most visitors are going to read much into the design of the pavilion. Its contents, as well as the pools will be the main attractions (don’t exactly like using that word).

I personally don’t have an issue with the design from what I can make of it. I think I’ll draw my final conclusions once it’s completed.

Holy crap, we really dodged a bullet with that Libeskind proposal, good lord that's a thoughtless mess.

As much of a disaster (I think) that whole proposal was, it paved the way for what we are seeing being built today.

The ironic thing about the Libeskind proposal, during the WTC site planning competition, none of the architects were supposed to "touch" the memorial area. It was supposed to be a blank slate due to the fact that it had its own, separate design competition. Yet then governor Pataki picked Libeskind's site plan largely based on his memorial concept. Pataki would make other decisions that would go on to shape what we have today (like limiting the Freedom Tower's height and insisting it by topped by a spire at 1,776 ft). The only realy good decision he made out of the whole thing was to get tower 1 built first, where originally it wasn't supposed to be. The change led to Larry Silverstein wanting to swap the locations of towers 1 and 2, which went nowhere. But I think things worked out for the best, and the memorial as well as the pavilion will become signature fixtures of Downtown.

Does the current design also include rooftop access?

I think seeing the holes from above is better than at level
