Agreed that it's a bad year. For many years Montreal had one of the lowest homicide rates in Canada, roughly between 2012-2021.
Actually, the area patrolled by the SPVM (Montreal Police) has slightly above 2M people.

Two homicides (a stabbing and a shooting) and one suspicious death in K-W over this past week. All unrelated, it seems.

Toronto as of Nov 13 was at 60 which is on track for the fewest homicides in at least 5 years. if it stays below 65 it will be the fewest since 2017

also Wednesday has the fewest murders while thursday has the most

I think Ottawa is at 15 now, after a double shooting in the west end. 1 dead, 1 critically injured.

Laval is at 5.

An older woman called police about a threatening young(er) man. Maybe her son or a renter. The police came and left. Shortly thereafter she was killed.

Somebody's gonna be answering questions on that one.

We must have very few Calgary forumers active anymore, judging by the crickets about my post.

It looks like Hamilton will have under ten homicides this year.

This is Hamilton's ninth homicide of 2023.

With less then 2 weeks until the end of the year it seems Toronto is having a better year (so far) then the past 5.

Murders by end of year.

2018: 98
2019: 79
2020: 71
2021: 85
2022: 71
2023 year to date(Dec-19): 66

And for fun Toronto's size-wise American sister Chicago which looks to be having a better year.

2018: 567
2019: 506
2020: 772
2021: 800
2022: 688
2023 year to date (Dec-19): 599

Pretty awesome considering the City population has been growing while number of homicides decreased.

Interesting how both Toronto and Chicago both spiked in 2021. Dunno if it was Covid effect.

I noticed that the ups and downs matched with each city. It's probably similar across the board with most North American cities.

Winnipeg is currently at 41 homicides. Not as bad as last year but still disgraceful. It was quiet earlier on in the year but recently there have been some rather disturbing/sad incidents. From the shooting incident where four people died to the stabbing last week of a 14 year old girl in downtown Winnipeg in the middle of the day. More recently A Ukranian refugee was stabbed to death.

I know some one that was jumped about two weeks ago at the same intersection this happened, right across the street coming out of a 7/11.

No city is as bad as Winnipeg, unfortunately. This week a Ukrainian who had just come to Canada in 2022, was murdered at random, as he was getting ready for work. He leaves behind a wife and child.

'We need to address the violent crime in Manitoba': Province's homicide rate nearly triple national average

Grim new statistics show Manitoba once again has the highest homicide rate per capita in all of Canada.Newly released data from Statistics Canada shows Manitoba’s homicide rate rose 40 per cent in one year from rates of 4.45 per 100,000 people in 2021 to 6.24 in 2022. That's nearly triple the national 2022 average of 2.25.

"I think the statistics highlight just how serious this situation is,” Justice Minister Matt Wiebe said. "It really puts a fine point on the fact that we need to do better and we need to address the violent crime in Manitoba." In 2022 - 88 people across the province were killed, meaning 26 more people were killed than the year before.

The Winnipeg Police Service says so far this year there have been 38 homicides in Winnipeg. That includes the four people killed on Langside Street Sunday. "The situation that happened on Langside the other night was absolutely horrific and tragic," Wiebe said. "I think it helped Manitobans understand just how serious this issue is."

The data from Statistics Canada also highlighted a concerning trend - rising rates of youth being accused of homicide. It says in Canada last year - the number of accused nearly doubled the 10-year average with 90 young people being accused in 2022.

Quick FYI - Montreal's numbers are for the island (city and on-island suburbs serviced by SPVM), population 2.1M, so the rate is closer to 1.6 per 100k.
