Shotgun wedding???

(I am in no way making light of this horrible situation. It's just that after over 40 years in medicine, you develop a healthy sense of "gallows humour" that you share when commiserating with your colleagues. Our front facing facades however remain purely professional).

No arrests yet. In an Ottawa context, one could speculate about who brings guns to a wedding, but I'll go no further and wait for more detailled reporting.

The two dead men have been identified as Said Mohamed Ali, 26, and Abdishakur Abdi-Dahir, 29. Both men are from Toronto.

I don't live that far away from this location, a 10 minute drive at most. I would not consider it a high crime district, mostly a middle class suburban area. It happened at a convention centre built in the last ten years, next to hotels and restaurants close to the airport. Shocking!

I suspect the Ottawa situation was a Pharmaceutical disagreement.

Gee, what a surprise their last names aren’t Smith and Jones.

28?? This has been a bad year for Montreal. They are ahead of Winnipeg.

But Montreal has a million extra people in the city limits. Winnipeg is just under 800k and Montreal is roughly 1.8M.

Agreed that it's a bad year. For many years Montreal had one of the lowest homicide rates in Canada, roughly between 2012-2021.

How many does Winnipeg have this year?

But yea staying in MTL for a month this year by UQAM you can really feel a downward spiral. Seeing construction workers shooting needles in the back alley and a noticeable amount of harassment and zombies in the area was quite eye opening.

It’s still a very safe city for the most part but I hope they can address these problems soon before it becomes the 90s all over again.

I believe Winnipeg is at 22, which is on target for 33, compared to 53 last year.

Yeah that area around Berri UQAM was worse before. The area around Uqam and the bus station was really bad at one point, specially going down de Maisonneuve and Ontario all the way to Hochelaga maisonneuve. LOTS of drugs and prostitution. The park across the street from the bus station was a notorious drug spot. That area had been cleaned up, sad to hear it is starting to slip again. SMH

As far as WInnipeg goes we are at 22 or 23 homicides so far.

I am looking at google street view of montreal and it appears the bus station has been shut down. I just remembered that grey hound shut down its Canadian service, but I thought they still ran routes between American cities and Canadian cities? Does the grey hound still come into MOntreal somewhere?

If you open up that link you see the old bus station, if you turn google view around you can see the park I am talking about. That was basically a crack park at one point.

^ They moved just north of the old site. I believe Greyhound are still running routes to/from Boston and NYC.

My kids use it all the time.

There are two companies doing Montréal-Ottawa/Gatineau.

Maheux and Orléans Express.

Not sure what your point is. These guys were victims and not even the intended targets as per police.

In Ottawa, it is not a secret that, if your surname is Smith or Jones, and if you are not involved in drug or gang activity, then the chances of being a victim of gun violence are perishingly small (unless you have an armed and crazy family member).

Is this actually the case and confirmed? I've heard it was a targeted shooting but not that they killed the "wrong" (sic) guys. Though it's highly probable that out of all of the people shot - 8 in total - there were some who had no involvement in gang activity.

In terms of murder victims and perpetrators in Ottawa, some people named Smith and Jones might indeed be involved, but other demographic factors might be at play.
