Do most people call it that? It's been like decades since LSD was rerouted and the building stopped being a lone outpost separated from the Loop . . .
How bout something unique 'n jazzy like Geodesic Place or The Buckminster (to go along with the Buckingham) . . .

^Hey, it's Chicago. The "Maxwell Street Market" has moved twice since leaving Maxwell Street; The "South Water Market" even moved the addresses and streetname when it moved in 1926, and "Rush Street" is at State and Division.

At any rate, condominium names are almost impossible to change because they are legal subdivisions.

The building is called Outer Drive East. . . most people probably refer to it by the address of 400 Randolph. . . but I suppose some of us will refer to Willis Tower as Sears Tower. . . like I said before. . . I'm too lazy to add syllables. . .

Out-er Drive East = 4
Four Hun-dred East Ran-dolph Drive = 7

Rush Street, the area, for the non-college-binge-drinking-crowd, is actually along Rush Street north of Walton to about Elm. The area you describe is Division Street, and just lumped in with Rush because they're only a block or two apart - but the demographics are nothing alike, they didn't nickname the real Rush Street area "Viagra Triangle" for nothing.

That always confused people when I say I live over in the Rush Street area (btw, I don't patronize businesses within that triangle.....completely different demographic for me ). But typically people think I'm talking about Division Street. That area should come up with its own name.

When tourists ask for "Rush Street" where should I send them? Or does it depend on their age?

I'm not sure why anyone would be calling Division "Rush Street." I lived on Dearborn just north of Division for several years in the early 2000s and when people I knew who didn't live in the Gold Coast said "Rush Street," they meant the area around Mariano Park, not the bars along Division. If they wanted the bars along Division, they'd say Division or they'd say "Rush and Division," which is the more common in my circles.

As for tourists, ask them what they're looking for. If you know the city well enough to be helping tourists, you should be able to give them specific directions based on what they're actually seeking. If a tourist asked for directions to "Northwestern," you wouldn't just give them directions to whichever of the University, hospital or train station you felt like, you'd ask a follow up question to gain clarification.

Wow, they really backed off from demolishing anything significant. Also appreciate Executive Committee resolution: "Commit to the long term viability of University Hall (UH) and the Behavioral Sciences Building (BSB)."

^ I kind of liked the student services building on the east campus, but it is a very inconvenient place to get to. very out of the way. the new location makes much more sense. but it's just weird they're demolishing it because it seemed to be in great shape

I kind of liked it too - Student Services was the old Circle Court Shopping Center from the 70s, but I don't think it's worth saving really. I suppose technically those two little lecture halls are part of the Netsch work, too, but without the roof court there isn't much left to them.

It's a matter of syllables. . . I'm sure of it

this creates a large stretch of properties without a historic nature easily identified by the public. From the Hilton to Blackstone, I forsee this section being a huge battle ground over what is and isn't appropriate in a historic district. Especially in a place that demand wise would dictate mega developments, but in keeping with the nature of the context, will need to be of very different proportions to the length and prominence of such a potential site.

Not looking forward to that in the next boom.

also, were both of those six story structures in the block behind it demolished?

and if so for what reason or justification?

^Yes, East-West University just finished demolition of two former film exchange buildings on Wabash that they bought last year. Because . . . a homeless person might try to break into them. Or a scary guy might hide in the alley behind one of them.
