I feel that this building is way too massive for this plain, blue facade. The only thing that breaks it up is the signature "spiral" that wraps it. I have a similar issue with 30 Hudson.

It's very nice at street level though, and will be even better when life moves in and the retail and restaurants open.

Tishman Speyer's The Spiral Earns CoStar's Commercial Development of Year Honors

Tishman Speyer
Mar 31, 2023

Quote:
Tishman Speyer today announced that The Spiral, its recently-completed West Midtown office tower, has won the 2023 CoStar Impact Award for best commercial development in the New York City region.

The CoStar Impact Awards recognize exemplary commercial real estate transactions and projects completed in 2022 with significant influence in neighborhoods across 128 major markets in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.

Designed by BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group, The Spiral rises to 1,031 feet and features a cascading series of landscaped terraces and hanging gardens as its signature element. The terraces ascend one per floor in a spiraling motion to create a unique, continuous green pathway that wraps around the façade of the tower, supplying its occupants with readily accessible fresh air and outdoor space.
Quote:
The Spiral, which is pursuing LEED Gold certification, prioritizes people first through its biophilic design and intense focus on health, wellness and sustainability. Tishman Speyer's forward-looking approach has helped attract a number of the world's most diverse and innovative companies to The Spiral, including industry leaders Pfizer, Debevoise & Plimpton, HSBC, AllianceBernstein, Baker Tilly, NewYork-Presbyterian, SEB and Turner Construction.

On the top floor of the 66-story tower, Tishman Speyer has created ZO Clubhouse, a premier amenity center and lounge that is available to all customers in the tower. The Clubhouse features an open-air terrace, panoramic views of New York City, a beautifully furnished lounge, food and beverage service, and multiple spaces for meetings, conferences and events. The Spiral also features Studio, Tishman Speyer's flexible workspace solution, with a full suite of furnished, on-demand availability offerings, including coworking spaces, private suites, conference rooms and hot desk space along with high-speed Wi-Fi, conferencing technology and a dedicated staff.
Quote:
Tishman Speyer is also partnering with award-winning chefs and restaurateurs on three culinary destinations at the base of the 2.8 million square-foot tower. The firm is working with Chef Gabriel Kreuther on a 5,700-square-foot full-service restaurant, as well as an all-day café serving breakfast and lunch, and featuring small plates and specialty wine and cocktails in the evening. Tishman Speyer is also collaborating with Erik Ramirez and Juan Correa, the team behind Llama San and Llama Inn, on a 6,000 square-foot restaurant showcasing Peruvian-Japanese cuisine. The Llama team is also operating the food & beverage program for the ZO. Clubhouse.

Located at the intersection of the High Line and the four-acre Bella Abzug Park, The Spiral encompasses an entire city block stretching from West 34th to West 35th Streets and from 10th Avenue to the park. The six-story base of the building incorporates a grand lobby featuring thought-provoking art by a variety of partners. StudioDrift has created a mesmerizing upside-down landscape consisting of kinetic mechanical flowers that gracefully open and close in synchronized motion. Meanwhile, Sourabh Gupta's Botanicals create the illusion of garden ponds, with lush vegetation growing at the edges.

the thing thats eye catching to me and that i like about the spire is the high quality of it, but obviously not the bland design. you have to be up close or at least in range of it to notice though. its right up there in terms of quality materials with what i would consider the apex of this kind of impression, manhattan west.

It’s a very nice building, and among the top 3 most expensive built in the city (along with Freedom Tower and 50 Hudson), but it’s a little overwhelming in bulk. The massing is much better than 50 Hudson, which is almost oppressive. I think the two buildings would come off better away from each other. And so would the skyline.

oh, Quality Materials huh ? . . what materials ? . .
yeah, its got very nice glass . . and way too much of it . .
in the same ol’ shit silvery color . . Manhattan West did “all glass” best,
and got away with it, splendidly . . the 30 & 10 HY glass towers complex
contributed to the skyline with pleasing dramatic angles . . this “high line
meets the skyline” square-footage hog, has about the same aesthetic
chops as the 60s downtown line-up of towers along Water St . .
No stainless, no corten, no beautiful stone, no terra-cotta, no color,
no crown . . nothin’ to accent, it’s bulky sophomoric massing . .

Gimmicky, saw-toothy steps, traipse horizontally across the facade,
to form kinda dumb-lookin’, vertically stacked shiny boxes . . Not graceful . .
Spiral is tall, without any beautiful soaring skyscraper form (or sections) . .
Ingles seems to fight having impressively soaring vertical lines or indents
that would benefit the look of his tallest towers . . instead be goes for
clunky horizontals lines . . 2 WTC has just the one impressive vertical at
the SW corner . . from most angles, the rest of that building appears
to be backed up with the horizontal rooflines of stepped banal boxes,
massacring any upward sweep of an exciting skyscraper vibe . .

Having to be smushed against the big lump of other HY behemoths,
doesn’t help the look of Spiral either . . it hardly stands out . .
About its defining design of a “hanging gardens” concept, well there’s
barely noticeable twigs anywhere, and it is summer . . and check out
the deadening way that harsh cold glass slams into concrete sidewalk
Whoa! Quite the Inviting streetscape that this big boxy thing offers, eh ?
. . Aren’t spirals suppose to be somewhat elliptically shaped or somethin’ . .

Yeah Spiral took a ton of people, dough, labor, and consideration to get
built . . all that is impressive . . but everything about the design vibe
& presence of this big fat tower, seems half-baked . .
I do like Ingles twisted Westside buildings somewhere around W.18th St . .
After decades they’re still uncompleted . . What’s up with that ? . .

Tishman Speyer’s Spiral secures 3 new financial-services leases in booming Hudson Yards

By Steve Cuozzo
August 13, 2023

Quote:
While many older office properties struggle, the dominant pulling power of Manhattan’s new-generation towers is on display again this week. Three just-signed financial-firm leases at Tishman Speyer’s Spiral have brought the 2.8 million square-foot, 66-story skyscraper to 75% leased — just a year since it opened.

The three new deals total 112,000 square feet. In the largest, global asset manager Marshall Wace is taking 79,000 square feet on the whole 32nd floor and part of the 33rd floor, moving from 350 Park Ave.

Betheseda, Md.-based ProShares, an ETF provider, signed for 9,000 square feet. A third, unidentified global asset management firm took 24,000 square feet.

The firms join earlier tenants including Pfizer, the anchor tenant; and HSBC, Debevoise & Plimpton, Alliance Bernstein and Turner Construction, which was the project’s general contractor.

The Spiral has the official address of 66 Hudson Blvd. East and rises between West 34th and West 35th streets and between 10th Ave. and the boulevard. It’s north of Related Companies’ Hudson Yards complex and Brookfield Property’s Manhattan West and falls within the booming, city-designated Hudson Yards District.
