Wow, that's quite distracting.

The MTO has a few different types of VMS installations, with the one you linked to being the top of the line model.

Slightly smaller single colour signs recently in Northern Ontario, so there is some flexibility. North Bay has signs on the highways going North, East and West that are single colour and quite new, and the east and westbound ones are only single post installations.

http://goo.gl/maps/rtGNh
http://goo.gl/maps/OCsdE

The MTO also uses semi-permanent portable (trailer) VMSs that can be changed remotely. The fixed signs in North Bay replaced these, but they can still be seen elsewhere like 417 approaching Arnprior.

On StreetView you can see two different signs, one for the construction and one for the MTO in general that is still there.

I'm not sure if these signs outside of major areas can be considered full COMPASS installations, but they can all be changed remotely. The fixed ones show PSAs when not in use, and the portable ones are usually blank, I imagine to conserve batteries. They all update to show highway closures ahead however.

Ottawa will probably have the big full colour ones but I just wanted to show that the MTO has some other choices.

I would guess the sign will follow soon...
I too noticed the support structure installed on RR174 westbound between Montreal Road and Blair.

Freeway traffic management and CCTV cameras

You may have noticed that new CCTV cameras are poping-up along Hwy 417 from Parkdale to Walkley Road as part of the overall widening project. I was told these should be in operation soon. New cameras at Bayswater, Bronson, O'Connor, Nicholas, Vanier Pkwy, St. Laurent, OR174, Innes, and Walkley.

As for the overhead VMSs - the hardware will be installed soon as well. However, they may not be operational until the spring since there are apparently issues with the available power source on at least two of the signs.

I did notice this in my community/ on the HWY at Baywater.

Will they be using these for official traffic flow demands? And/or are they to be publicly available?

Cameras views will be available to the public on the MTO (http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/tra...75.717086&z=11) and City of Ottawa (http://traffic.ottawa.ca/map/index) web sites.

A number of traffic loops are being installed as part of the overall highway work going on now, but not sure if these will feed the MTO traffic control centre in real-time to allow for dynamic sign messaging.

It's always interesting to go for a drive and see how many loop detectors there are installed on our roads. They follow a pretty easy to identify pattern, it's usually a short 6x6 wooden post at the road side with a green/white plow marker on the front side and a grey electrical box on the back. If you know what to look for you can spot them everywhere.

Although beyond the City of Ottawa, the next stage of Highway 417 west of Arnprior, up to near the Calabogie junction, is under pre-construction. I believe it is scheduled for completion in 2015 or 2016.

According to the latest Southern Highways Program published by the MTO, that is just a short section up to the small intersection with Scheel Dr being built now. The next major section to Renfrew is in "Planning for the Future," whatever that means. Expanding the Queensway between the 416 and Island Park to 8 lanes doesn't appear to be on the books yet either. We'll have to see if it pops up next year or not.

The MTO's new overhead variable message sign on the westbound Queensway at Bayswater was installed some time last night.

I noticed today the westbound Carp Road exit off the 417 is closed and all ripped up. They appear to be replacing the culverts underneath the interchange. I hope they're also widening the exit to 2 lanes (like all the other westbound exits in the Moodie-Hwy7 corridor), because I've seen some days where there are lines backed up all the way onto the highway lanes, and with the bridge widening/lane reductions, there will be long lines to cross the bridge.

They also seem almost ready to start rebuilding the new Carp River bridges in each direction.

^ Have any of the new lanes opened yet? It's been a really long time since they started construction out there....

Out east, it looks like they've started building the rapid replacement bridge for Vanier/Riverside, and the Lees one is coming along nicely.

Hurdman bridge widening is also nearing completion--looks they'll start paving it soon.

EDIT: Looked at the plans, and they're adding an additional left turn lane at the Carp exit for east-to-south traffic movement.

No, the lane widths are the same as what they were before construction (4 lanes everywhere). However, traffic was switched a while ago to the inside lanes and the old outer ones are starting to get ripped up now.

Can you post a link to this plan? I'd like to see it, as I love these sort of things.
