Yeah it was, and New Mexico is undoubtedly a nice place... I just got a giggle out of the notion that someone watched a show like Breaking Bad and came away thinking 'wow, what a lovely place New Mexico is!' haha

I honestly had little desire to visit NM before watching BB and Better Call Saul. They do sell Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and New Mexico in general as (a) beautiful place(s), although a bit crime ridden.

ABQ as depicted in BB/ BCS made it look bleak and depressing. Santa Fe and (esp.) Taos are beautiful towns though. ABQ is just a big city.

It depends. If you are very poor or very rich, California is a good place to live. The poor get good benefit checks, and often get rental assistance. If you are rich, you can afford good housing and California has a good climate and great cities like LA, SF and SD with pretty scenery and lots of things to do.

If you are middle class, California is terrible. You can't afford the housing or the high taxes. Go to Texas, Florida or other lower cost states where your money will give you a better standard of living. Or if you don't mind cold winters, consider the northern tier of states shown in the map above.

if the US was roughly divided up into 7 "californias", economically speaking:

Bah, I don't mind. Not affected by your national issues or stereotypes anyway.
You know, they just say "damn" would be rude, impolite.

Here in France, we've got hundreds of ways to curse. But I guess it's better for you guys not to be aware.
I shouldn't even tell you.
actually you are quite directly affected by everything that happens in the usa. for one example, here you are.

I would imagine they say dang.

When I was in Georgia, I stopped by a town called Carnesville, and the guy at the gas station sounded like what Cookie Monster would sound like if he was a heavy duty smoker. Couldn't understand a word he was saying. The voice had a very slow bass. Like a human subwoofer.

I'd imagine someone like that would say dang.

Some of those rural areas in the South, might as well be in a different country. Its so foreign... especially to us NJ folks!

here's one of the other great US language divides. "soda" vs. "pop" vs. "coke".

chicago is one of the few major cities where "soda" and "pop" are both commonly and interchangeably used, so this particular "word fight" always amuses me.

^ thats a good one — but what about sody pop? might be mayberry specific?

i guess the bubbler map would only be over wisconsin.

is there a treelawn map? that would be a good one as its known by various other monikers like the devil’s lawn and such around the country.

the treelawn is the little strip of land in front of houses between the sidewalk and the street you have to take care of, but the gubamint can dig it up and put stuff there anytime they need to.

^ tree lawns are called "parkways" in chicago, and just about every residential side street in the city, and most burbs, has them.

wikipedia says that the technical term for them is "road verge", thought they go by lots of different names in different places.

I always found "Pop" irritating out of my Midwestern family. Just cant stand the word with their nasally accent PAAP ... gross.

But then I learned that the south says "coke" even for not coke which is just infinitely more infuriating to me.
