my school (SFU) is on a trimester system, three semesters per year of equal length: jan-april, may-august, sept-dec.

guess that makes late feb the middle of the semester, classes end early in april, followed by exam weeks and a week or so off before the next semester.

last year we got two weeks off at this time for the olympics

i've never done the summer semester but i might this year, trying to wrap up my degree.

geology of colorado actually sounds like a fun course, at least compared to "DESIGN AND METHOD IN QUALITATIVE COMMUNICATION RESEARCH" and "DOCUMENTARY RESEARCH IN COMMUNICATION" which i'm in right now.

I'm at a point where I really can't do some of the things I could do five years earlier (such as drink all day or pull all-nighters). Hell, I rarely ever drink anymore period.

I'm also writing a thesis, so that kinda limits what I can and can't do as far as cognitive impairment is concerned. I'm half-tempted to go on a wicked bender if I actually graduate in May.

Ah, the good old days. I still remember writing my undergrad senior thesis staying up until 3 or 4 am writing under the influence (Dinner was usually a pint of Ben & Jerry's and a half bottle of Wild Turkey). Now that I think about it, some of my best writing occurred when I was drunk or had a hangover.

Of course, I don't think that Brembly fellow would approve of your drinking.

I don't know why you can't just be like Ontario and not have a coast at all.

I was already taking German when we got together.

The way I have my four-year schedule planned out, I'll be taking plenty of German (minor), along with some Spanish and French.
I really enjoy the language courses, so it's pretty easy credits.

Same with MUN, but nobody takes classes in the summer (most of mine aren't even offered). I'll have to take a few courses if I want to graduate on time (which isn't really a big deal to be honest, I'll probably go back to my old job for at least 6-12 months), since I'll only have completed 7 after two semesters. I'll probably take math over the summer, since it's a prerequisite for several geography courses.

My step-brother's recording studio won a Grammy. He's a recording engineer in Chicago. It was for Mr. Pinetop Perkins.

Add another title for bluesman Pinetop Perkins: oldest Grammy winner.

Perkins, 97, snagged a statue Sunday for best traditional blues album for "Joined at the Hip: Pinetop Perkins & Willie "Big Eyes" Smith." With the win, Perkins edged out the late comedian George Burns as the oldest Grammy winner, said Stephanie Schell, a spokeswoman for the Grammy organization.
The studio....

^Congrats to your step-bro.

No more trips to the dentist for a while, please. I got my crown re-attached this afternoon. He didn't have to use novocaine or anything but my mouth was open with the dentists and his assistants fingers in there for a good 40-45 minutes. My jaw hurts.
Next tooth that falls out is staying out. I'm buying a Goddamn house trailer........GAWDDAMMIT!!!

Yes. I was referring to (and I think Ayreonaut was referring to) a spat between an Ottawa area MP and Rex Murphy, where the MP said something like "Newfoundland should do what Ontario does and stop relying on the coast guard", and Rex responded with "Ontario doesn't have a coast" and "Ontario doesn't need the coast guard".

Ontario has not only a salt water coast in the north, but in the Great Lakes to the south, the Canadian coast guard has a sizable presence, though in Superior we rely on the American coast guard. They're the ones who do the ice breaking in Thunder Bay harbour in March to start our shipping season.

I don't think the Canadian coast guard stations a vessel in Thunder Bay Harbour anymore, so the US Coast Guard sends their ice breaker up here before or after they open Duluth. Ships can't leave until later in April because the Sault locks don't open until then but we can do stuff within the harbour in the meantime.

I'm not sure if it is a solo effort on the US Coast Guard's part, or if they're just reinforcement for local crews. They can open the harbour up within a week, though, and it is the third or fourth largest in Canada in terms of area. Our Port Authority is one of the city's biggest landlords. Duluth's port is also really big, but I'm not sure if it is bigger than ours or not in terms of area.

Check out the District 9 US Coast Guard Webpage. They have a list of the icebreakers that work the lakes in this area:

http://www.uscg.mil/d9/D9Units.asp

The "Katami Bay" based out of Sault Ste. Marie is the one that does work in your area. The Sault Ste. Marie Sector's responsibilities cover all of Lake Superior, and the northern sections of Huron and Michigan, it seems:

Haha, nope. Actually, I was referring to this. Also, Blue Puttees is a retarded name for a ship.
