Downtown LA: 2 hours, an iphone, not much better to do...

I occasion to be in Downtown LA last Friday and since it had been a bit since I had been down there, I decided to take a stroll.

I parked at the Music Center since I wanted to see the new Gehry (for better or worse) and then maybe hit up the Broad (unfortunately still closed). Instead I ended up walking down Bunker Hill, exploring Broadway a bit, and then roaming through South Park while headed back up the hill. My phone battery of course died while on Figueroa near 8th, so I missed a few things.

It's been awhile since I did a photothread (I have probably 20 sitting that I'd like to do), but I decided to share...

It’s nice to see LA captured on a cloudy winter day, most photos are usually done on the many sunny days we often have. Since COVID-19 I haven’t been downtown but twice counting today and I’m blown away at the progress that is happening, it’s as if some highrises have sprouted up overnight.

I totally agree! And cloudy skies, or a blue sky with white puffy clouds, can make for more interesting shots; the clouds definitely add to the many moods of LA; it's not ALL sunshine here, hehe. And I actually find skies punctuated with clouds to be very beautiful.

Nice shots!

Agree with craigs. DTLA is improving quickly. When did you take these photos? Even with COVID, there's still a very noticeable lack of pedestrian activity.

I visited a lot of these same spots in 2019, and while DTLA's pedestrian traffic can vary a lot from street to street, I too was struck by the ghost-town feel of almost all these photos. I definitely saw a TON more people in some of these places (for example, the area in front of the Broad and Disney Hall was packed). I think a lot of the deadness is probably Covid-related, unless this is all very early in the morning.

It's a combo of both. Nothing was open for months, especially museums and concert halls. Tourism had been non existent and office workers are not working from their offices... All that being said, it's getting busier by the day. Yesterday almost felt like a normal Sunday. Grand central market was bustling, the sidewalk cafes were busy... Normalcy almost

For reference, these were ALL shot between 3 and 6 on a Friday afternoon. It's the first time I had spent much time in downtown since Covid, and it was eerily quiet compared to every other time I've been there in the past few years. Aside from cars, I sometimes went blocks without seeing another pedestrian.

My guess is, because of the ongoing pandemic, downtown LA has become a little bit of a ghost town, because I'm very sure there are still fewer office workers there because many are still working from home. And it's only recently that museums are now allowing people in at a limited capacity, plus even though Laker/Clipper games are going on, there are still no spectators at Staples. I think gradually the crowds will start coming to DTLA, though.

I can attest that all my relatives that work in downtown Los Angeles are still working at home. They all work for big corporate businesses and others work for the government and they employs a lot of people in their downtown offices. Only one who works for Superior Court has gone back to the office.
