Inner-suburban Toronto has a lot in common with the west side of LA, especially North York.

LA is really just at that threshold, isn't it?

There are a lot of problems with the model, but after nearly a decade of full-on Euro streetwall urbanism, I can really appreciate that hybrid approach when I am in it.

Something like Fountain Avenue in LA, which is a little like a more lush, warm-climate version of Monkland in NDG, really hits the spot in terms of relaxed urbanism.

I've never been to Europe, but from all I know of it from countless images, walking/driving videos, movies, literature, etc. I actually prefer North American urbanism (tho that varies on a city-by-city and even neighbourhood level basis). It's just that North America has so much less urbanism at each intensity level and so much more suburbanism relative to its population.

The TTC one always stuck in my head more, even before I lived here. For better or worse!

I actually had to look up videos of the Montreal version as I couldn't really remember it too well.

Yeah, it was Square One on Fountain and that little area isn't representative of the street at all. Still, it was a nice flip-floppy city morning. Abbot Kinney in Venice is more like what I was remembering, feel-wise.

Try cycling up Poplar Plains Rd from Davenport to St. Clair! (streetview flattens out hills so you don't get the full effect)

When I was comparing Levesque, I did it with University Ave and not Avenue Road...............they are one long street but the difference north and south of Bloor is glaring.

Always surprised me that such a grand and historic city like Montreal never had a grand blvd. Levesque {once Dorchester} is the only thing that even remotely reminds me of one and is rather ugly and unimpressive compared to University.

Montreal's desire for grandeur really came about in the Drapeau era, well after its prewar zenith. Things like the metro stations are Montreal's gestures in that direction, and they're very '60s.

It was never a Buenos Aires or a Detroit with big boulevards and plans. The Montreal of the Golden Square Mile/Canadian metropolis era was a teeming and dense place, not an expansive one. That was what Drapeau had his distaste for. He had this sense of a crooked, seedy, old-fashioned city. He was a weird guy but it didn't come from nothing.

Also, Montreal's hugest, most ambitious projects in that era were infrastructural more than architectural. The bridges, the canal, the mountain railroad tunnel, everything that it took to get that island giant hooked up and in the driver's seat from an industrial perspective -- those things were enormous. But they weren't buildings and plazas.
