Seems like I just posted a floor being poured a few days ago… yesterday pouring another. Rockin’.

Is it just me or does this building have an unnecessarily weird structure?

No, no...the way this thing is looking during construction is definitely peculiar to say the least and also way different than its renderings. Also does anybody know why the glass/facade has been moving so slowly?

Bearing in mind I'm not an engineer from Foster + Partners, I'd venture the build here is very interesting given there is no tradition elevator core rising from bedrock to support floors... so Apple could have a huge vertical column-free, and elevator core-free... flagship retail store at Yonge and Bloor. That's a lot of fruit for sure.

The residential and hotel tower floor-plates essentially hang above the double height retail space from the mega-columns and the angled hangers (exoskeleton) support multiple corners of the floor-plates which cannot be poured until each set of hangers is installed. Thus the lag between pouring the main floorplate (sans corners) followed by hanger installation, followed by corners poured.

All this so a super-tall can float above that retail $pace (with out the help of a traditional elevator core).

glass/facade

A truss system was being installed on all 4 sides of the tower (lots of crane lifting, traffic control and installation work)... new cladding will be installed behind the system and revealed as it moves up the tower.

Thus the pause in glazing installation.

P.S. this looks the same as the latest renderings ... though actual glazing/cladding blows the renderings out of the water lol.

Here's a shot of the truss system (darker stuff in the centre of the photo). Note also the corners being poured because the section has angled hangers installed to support them.:

Also, notice that the truss system for façade installation is only just below the system for pouring the concrete on the corners. It has to wait for that to get out of the way.
Finally, Slow is the brand on this one. It has been since the beginning.

Pouring the 30th(?) floor on the south side, as workers scurry to finish laying conduit and rebar on the north side.

BloorMan

Future glazing/cladding work will happen behind the new truss system just installed and be revealed as the system moves upward.

The exterior cladding is growing on me. It looks modern, but it also looks like a nod to the older towers around it, stopping it from being an eyesore. I think it will start having a lot more presence in the skyline when it eclipses the rooflines of the older office towers, especially as more of the tower is enclosed.

I don't believe the floors (other than the corners) hang from the mega-columns, although they carry much of the load. There is a very large steel structure with diagonal columns in the ground level space and up through 5 that carry the center load. Transfer slab on 5 is where the elevator pits for the hotel and residences are located. There is very much a core from this level up.

^ Agreed. And that core is further connected to the super columns with shear walls. This thing is a tank; no wonder it’s taking so long.

The 32nd(?) floor being poured… more than 1/3 of the way to 94* storeys (*if Sam gets approval for the extra 9 floors).

To me, it kinda looks like they might continue the facade based on the increase in scaffolding.

They have been doing weekend road closures for months to assemble that scaffolding. Once it's assembled fully (almost there now), it will proceed up the building to install the cladding.

Also - City Council voted on a confidential attachment related to the requested height increase here yesterday. We have to wait for it to be released, but it is believed to be a settlement approving the height increase.

The local councillor toured the building this week in advance of the vote, which suggests the developer is happy with the result.

Intrepid photographer/archivist @Benito of the tower’s rise ... can now practically shake hands with workers on site.
