St Lawrence Centre Redevelopment | ?m | ?s | CreateTO l interational design competition

Images from the International Design Competition short-listed groups to redevelop the brutalist, concrete STC. All renders are from the St. Lawrence Centre’s new website: https://stlcnext.org/

NOTE: tons of detailed renders for each proposal are here - https://stlcnext.org/design-concepts/

Brook McIlroy, Trahan Architects, and Hood Design Studio

The smaller of the 2 halls.

Diamond Schmitt, Smoke Architecture, and MVVA

^ Not sold on the exterior waves (supposedly clouds) but a nice swoopy multi-level interior space.

Hariri Pontarini, LMN Architects, Tawaw Collective, Smoke Architecture, and SLA

Unlike some of the other submissions, HPA leveraged a lot of transparency rather than deferring to the brutalist concrete building.

Guess all the proposals envision pedestrianizing Scott Street between the two performing arts centres.

RDHA, Mecanoo, Two Row Architect, and NAK Design Strategies

Lots of wood in place of concrete surfaces.

Zeidler: one image… the rest not worth the extra bandwidth required imo ;-)

Studio Hub (in Markham) | ?m | ?s | Ryan Reynolds/Maximum Effort l possible construction start this year (?)

Ryan Reynolds and ‘Maximum Effort’ along with Markham-based Watford Group are replacing a (fallow) smaller studio proposal known as First Studio City, with a much more ambitious 1.2 million square foot studio complex in Markham. Construction is supposedly scheduled to begin sooner rather later (demand is much greater than supply).

Developers say it will be the largest film and TV production hub in Canada (not sure that's true).

Story: https://variety.com/2023/film/news/r...to-1235531885/

No renderings yet - below is an old rendering of the much smaller First Studio City project originally proposed by Remington Group:

UT

2400 Dundas Street West l ?m l 36s l Fora l Giannone Petricone l pre-construction

Three mixed-use towers @ 36, 25 and 18 storeys… with some colour! for a change. 1000 sq metres of POPs/park, a grocery store and other retail uses.

carrythezero

carrythezero

250 King East | 139.5m | 43s | Emblem Developments | IBI Group l pre-construction

Now named “Allure”, some new pics of this one which is quite tall for its site east of Sherbourne.

Editor's Note ;-): the transformation of downtown east of Jarvis, including the West Don Lands and new projects sprouting in and around the Distillery District, continues to be rather astonishing… when the dust settles this former industrial wasteland will be one of the city’s most livable (and likeable) neighbourhoods imo. It’s already pretty great (thanks in part to the Danish architecture invasion) but destined to be greater... with the notable exception Pemberbum's monolithic "Time + Space"

401 Dundas East | 39.65m | 10s | Plaza Partners | BDP Quadrangle l pre-construction

New renderings of a nice BDPQ mid-rise on Dundas East.

Interesting that buildings as tall as in the renders in Yorkville would be allowed to be built that close to what looks like an airport runway. Is that an active airport?

That’s Downsview Airport (includes Bombardier lands + Canada Lands) which will be completely redeveloped.

The masterplan called “City Nature” is led by Henning Larsen Architects, KPMB, and SLA which will eventually convert the entire airport into a “city” with housing for 83,000 people and includes 1million sq metres of commercial/retail space along with 40 hectares of parks.

The first Phase is called the “Hanger District” which includes nearly 3,000 residential units, 3 million square feet of office and retail ... combined with1.5 million square feet of retrofitted hangar spaces and 6 acres of park.

I took these on the way to work, of Untitled Condos, a set of two towers going up on the right side of this massive construction site, and a tower rising next door, now on it's thirteenth floor, that will be a rental building replacing units removed for several construction sites in the area.

Even at 240 metres, 160 Front remains invisible from this classic s-w angle across the Don Valley.

The big master-plan for (soon to be decommissioned) Downsview Airport. I think this is includes the 26 building phase known as the “Hangar District” posted earlier, also from Northcrest.

CIBC Square is starting to get some bones!!!

Also, I'm mixed on 160 Front West. I love the stepped glass cladding and the edges, but the north/south view is a bit portly for my tastes. I'm hoping that once the cladding goes all the way up the crown, that optical illusion goes away and the massing looks less overweight.

^^ sweet koops!

But I don't think 160 Front West should have its angled, curvy crown clad in glass yet (... I know, I know... "shut up in the cheap seats buddy" ;-).

Love your "in progress" renders, koops! I still insist One Yonge will pass The One sometime this year or next, unless the The One laggards pick up the pace.
