Maybe that't what the Chinese have been striving for this whole time..

I gotta say I like the design more than I thought I would.

I didn't expect AS+GG to do such a good job integrating with Tribune Tower. I love the bronze I think that's what really makes the design work. I also like the clear simple symmetrical form. My only concern is for the parking. I'm hoping we don't see glowing parking levels at night like in the Trump building

Yes I did. I want to like this tower more but I keep seeing China when I see it. I really hope there are some positive modifications made before this thing moves forward, if it moves forward.

You're right! I did a google search for "Chinese skyscrpaers" and that was one that came up. I'll fix it.

Edit: Fixed!

Surprise, surprise: They carried over the billable hours from their work in Asia. The E-W profile, culminating in an incomplete Gothic arch, is nicely evocative of the old tower, but those N & S elevations are fully global-corporate-firm architecture. I'm a little disappointed in Smith, who has otherwise shown a commitment to the culture of his home town, in various other respects.

This certainly isn't a bad design, and it's footprint is small enough to remain not so conspicuous, but I'm underwhelmed.

Had South Korean Lotte Tower in the mix by mistake. Not that South Korea is terribly far from China.
Haha, awesome graphic HomrQT! It definitely has an east Asian vibe to it for sure, and I think that's one of the characteristics that I like about this tower. To have a truly great skyline, a city needs to accumulate skyscrapers of all varieties and time periods. Quite frankly, a design such as this isn't really currently present in Chicago, and I think its addition improves our skyline overall.
It contrasts well with the boxy old guard of the Sears and Hancock, while complimenting the curves of nearby Trump. i think this will end up looking great when completed.

Awesome. OCS is also doing thing. I think we need to keep this momentum going. If we can't have parking underground for whatever excuse developers give (cost, high water table, blah blah), this is the next best thing from an urbanist standpoint... short of eliminating parking entirely of course, but try convincing people of that.

I sincerely hope the neighborhood NIMBYs don't end up nerfing the height of this tower.

In what protectionist fiefdom does this tower fall under? SOAR? IIRC, I think they've been one of the better NIMBY groups when it comes to development...

It looks like 1180 Peachtree in Atlanta by Pickard Chilton.

Smith and Gill haven't done impressive work in the US.

I think my enthusiasm is a bit muted because I was expecting something different. And it isn't architecturally mind blowing. I sorta remember the Vista reveals blowing a lot more minds.

That said, it's hard not to deny from the renderings that it is an elegant (albeit somewhat safe) design. I don't think you're going to find a lot of haters on this site.

What's funny is to me that 1180 Peachtree looks more Chicago than this tower does. I really wish the design didn't change so much toward the Chinese look. Oh well. Built it!

I don't get the people complaining that this looks out of place. Would you have also complained about the Sears Tower when it was first proposed? How about Hancock?

All tall buildings look out of place at first.... and then they don't. This argument has less merit than the parking and view NIMBYs.

And of course it reminds you of Asian skyscrapers. Literally 90%+ of supertall skyscrapers built in the past 15 years have been in Asia. To say it looks like an Asian skyscraper is basically synonymous with saying it looks like a modern skyscraper.

Egh, this is straight mediocre to me. Def looks East Asian. Would prefer it had been something like a thin International Commerce Tower.

I was hoping for a slender 7 South Dearborn St type design, but lets be real that was never happening.

I'm not complaining though build it.

You hit it. My sentiments exactly. Lets face it, as great as the Chicago skyline is, it has gotten a little stale of late. A few needles mixed in with the iconic boxes will do wonders... and will help bring the year 2035 I'Robot (movie) Chicago skyline to life.

I also love how the batman points in the crown evoke a modern touch on the Sears/Hancock antennae.

I like that they intentionally added a fully completed Vista in that rendering, to somewhat mute the massive impact it will have on the skyline and keep potential NIMBY's from going into a full meltdown

Very smart on their part.

That's not right... it looks out of place because it looks East Asian. Clearly the tall buildings going up in NY and Dubai have a different vibe to what's going up in China. I refuse to believe that because a dozen or so similar towers are going up in China that this is now the global standard of modernity. They could put something better up that more represents Chicago and specifically the Tribune Tower.
