I think this discussion needs to begin with what's "right on the doorstep."

Then, none of the cities would qualify, not even the perfect almighty Los Angeles

I made it to Boise. What a beautiful trip. Here is how it went. Left salt lake city, headed to logan, then pocatello , followed by twin falls , and finally Boise. Took my eletric mercedes EQC. No problems with charging stations. Cannot get enough of the west. And yes Boise is a neat City. Less republican than i imagined. A lot great places to drink and eat, extremely clean and great downton. People are super friendly, more so than most cities i visited in the west. On my way back i will do an unusual drive....boise to Jackson wy via idaho falls then down to SLC.

I'm starting to become really interested in Reno. High desert, urban-ish but only a few hours to the bay. Neat.

Haven't been in a long time. Last time they were reviving downtown , seemed promising, the casino vibe was still quite present and i hate casinos . But talking about location, it is indeed well located.

Different strokes for different folks, but Reno would be one of the last places in the US I'd choose to live. It's SO isolated, with literally nothing for hundreds of miles to the north, east, and south (save for Carson City, which isn't much to speak of at all). The city itself is a miniature, more rundown Vegas. It's too far from the Bay to really visit there with any regularity. The one perk is you have Tahoe nearby, which is, admittedly, quite a perk. I think I'd be bored out of my mind living there.

And their police department is top notch.

At least according to that TV documentary.
