But, Via has other concerns.
Is there an unused class 5 railway between St John and Halifax? Otherwise it would have the same problem.

I remember when there were multiple trains per day from London to Stratford and Kitchener. You could go up in the morning, spend the day there and see a play, and then walk to the station to come back to London after the play. Can’t do that anymore.
In the late 1970's there were 5 daily trains each way between London and Toronto via Kitchener.

Why does it need to be faster than driving?
What if it was reliable?
What if they ran it and improved the track over time?

Because if it is slower than a car (or bus or ride share) then the potential customer base is too small. There has to be a better reason than “some guy on the internet likes trains” to build new infrastructure.

With the price of gas, if a family of 4 can travel for less than the cost of gas for a normal car, even if it is slower, it might be worth it.

The efficiency of a car per passenger-mile use improves as it is loaded with people.

Four train tickets (even if two are child fares) probably will cost more than the gasoline between Saint John and Halifax, an approximately 800km round trip.

A modern Honda CR-V AWD has a combined fuel consumption of 8.1L/100km. The trip would consume ~65-70L of fuel. Even at $2.00/L, that's $130-$140, divided by 4, so $32.50-$35 per person. I highly doubt an 800km round-trip ticket on a train would be viable at such a price.

A minivan would use about $50 in gas from Halifax to Moncton (using Halifax gas prices). A more efficient vehicle would be cheaper.

Even with way advance purchase Via would charge at least $100 for a route of that length, more if the kids are over 12.

Pick a year.... the last few years, it has not been a minivan. It has been a full size truck. A trip of 4 hours round trip in a truck is pushing $300+ So, if Corridor pricing was used, it would be affordable to switch from your truck to the train if it were on time and reasonably fast.

Instead of saying "no", say what is needed.

If somebody is using a full size truck as a family vehicle they likely don’t care about the price of gas, or they are doing something that requires a full size truck and a train would be useless.

In terms of “what is needed” - massive population growth in Atlantic Canada. If these were cities of millions then the car trip would take longer, the transit at either end would be better and you would need much less market share to fill up a train. Maybe as Ontario gets too expensive it will push up population growth.

A good way to spur growth is good transportation networks.

There are good transportation networks, just not the type you are personally a fan of.

That is very true but you have to make sure that those precious transportation infrastructure funds are being wisely spent in order to get the highest economic returns.

Yep. Utilization in tonne-km or pax-km per day is a good metric to look at usefulness. And a lot of the ideas proposed would be lightly utilized, at very high cost.

Maybe not as flashy as a hyper loop but much more proven technology.

Kind of comical that Washington State is ponying up $150M while BC is just $300k. I guess it’s a very short portion of track in BC

Hyperloop is a scam to delay the implementation of high speed rail. Musk has literally admitted this himself.

He's been a vocal opponent of public transport for a long time. He literally pitched the Hyperloop to try and derail (pun intended) California HSR.

https://www.wired.com/story/elon-mus...-mass-transit/

He knows what he's doing. He knows that better public transportation, especially in an increasingly urbanizing world means reduced car dependency. He also knows that eventual automation (when it comes) will further reduce car sales. He's pushing hard for a highly suburbanized world that requires individual car ownership. Hence, also the bullshit with the Boring Company and trying to argue that tunneling can be done for cheaper and will enable more driving.

All that said, I don't think even he imagined that so many useful idiots would fall for it and take up the ball and run with it.
