Chicago skyline with ORD in the foreground.

there's some massive telephoto compression going on here.

in reality, ORD is ~15 miles NW of downtown.

Toronto: about 8 km (5 miles) of the city from midtown Yonge and Eglinton on the left, to the lake on the right.

That Chicago O'Hara photo. I remember there was a skyline photo similar to that of Austin from the airport with a telephoto lens, and people commenting on it were swearing it had been Photoshopped not realizing what a telephoto lens does to a view like that.

And, man, what a photo. Chicago looks great there. Sears Tower has to be the most beautiful ugly skyscraper on the planet. lol It's not exactly a Chrysler Building type beauty - not what the average person would call "pretty" - but there is an awesome beauty about it that's hard to describe.

i believe the quality you are trying to describe is called "bad-ass".

the sears tower sure as hell ain't "pretty", but it's 100% pure grade-A "bad-ass".

it's a perfect big-shouldered monster for the city of big shoulders.

The Sears Tower will always be my favorite skyscraper. I grew up in suburban Chicago until the 2nd grade and some of my earliest memories were taking the train into the city and going to the top of the Sears Tower and John Hancock.

As someone who lived in Chicago twice and made the occasional trip East to South Bend Ind. that skyline (approached from East to West), was always jaw dropping… Especially when the Sun was setting in the West, behind it. Your view of the City captured it perfectly from the other side.
