Why so few Asians in Marin County?

The Bay Area is over 25% Asian I believe, but only 6% in Marin County. Is it just too isolated and removed from Asian population centers and amenities and the tech industry?

Probably all of that. Only two Bay crossings (Golden Gate Bridge and Richmond-San Rafael Bridge) vs three bridges between the Peninsula and East Bay, as well as the Transbay Tube and Caltrain. The rest of the Bay Area is just so much more accessible. Also Marin is a small employment center relative to SF, Oakland, and Silicon Valley. Most of it is protected parkland as well (Point Reyes, Mt Tam, the Headlands). Not much economic opportunity or community services/resources for immigrants to help them integrate into life in the US. SF was the epicenter for that with the Gold Rush, and then Oakland after the 1906 earthquake as SF rebuilt. There were some small Chinese fishing/shrimping villages in Marin but that's about it.

I would guess it's due to very low population growth and negligible housing construction (Marin has grown by only 40,000 people since 1980), few jobs relative to the rest of the region, and heavy bridge traffic/middling public transit into and out of the job centers.

Likely a combo of lacking transit, pricey housing, and a less welcoming "old money" attitude
Oh my gosh Angel Island was more like a prison for Asian immigrants, if you know the history about it. It was nothing like Ellis Island.

Not all of coastal Cali is heavily Asian.

Santa Cruz, very close to plurality (or soon majority?) Asian San Jose area, is pretty much all white, with some Hispanics in nearby towns.

Parts of Orange County and SD County are almost entirely white, and have the stereotypical 1970-era CA demographics. White WASPy people. Places like Corona del Mar, Laguna Beach, Dana Point. I think the LA County beach towns around Manhattan Beach are also extremely WASP white.

Also, upper income Asians often tend to prefer new(er) housing, so it's probably not unusual for older high income neighborhoods to have a lower share of Asians than the newer equivalents. So Irvine is much more Asian than neighboring Newport Beach, to take an example.

You can also here why development of Marin has been so limited, even relative to other parts of the Bay Area that has geographical constraints. Marin takes it to another level.

Marin is very anti-growth and not that many tech jobs.

Wow, the Vietnamese community is hyper-concentrated in East San Jose.

Japanese Americans are the only Asian group with a native-born majority.

Yeah, so is she.

She grew up in San Jose, and according to one of her standup comedy shows, that's how she learned how to do the Vietnamese accent.

Actually San Jose is in Santa Clara County and the largest demographic is Asian; followed by Hispanic and then White. Yes, Santa Cruz largest demographic is white.
