I don't know if this is a general development, but I did see a large shiny structure being hoisted outside my front porch this morning.

Costco inks 20-year lease for med district parcel

Dammit.

I love Costco, but this is the wrong place for it. I know IMD isn't best example of urbanism, but I am really tired of seeing the city suburbanized. This was an urban neighborhood and to insert this 16 acre monster, they need to cut up the street grid. 14th Place, 14th Street and Paulina will all have sections removed. This establishes even more crap context that will guide how the rest of the neighborhood and the IMD property develops. We had a clean slate to work with, and its now a lost opportunity.

Costco or IMD better pick up the tap for the loss of of the privitized meters they are replacing, as I assume they would be. The tax payers should not be subsidizing the loss of parking meters in exchange for free parking.

I know its a lease, but 20 years is a long time. Look at how much of the city has changed in 20 years, especially just east of the new Costco site.

(CNN) -- Tourists are used to staring at unusual attractions, but visitors in Chicago, Illinois, will soon have one staring right back at them in a big way.

EYE, a three-story tall "incredibly lifelike" sculpture of an eyeball, will go on display in July in the city's Pritzker Park as part of a celebration of public art in the Loop, Chicago's business district.

The three-dimensional installation, complete with a blue iris, was created by contemporary artist Tony Tasset...

...EYE will be on display from July 7 through October. Perhaps appropriately, it ends its run on Halloween.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Wait did someone use that one already?

Going through the zoning process, the developer will have had to identify somewhere else within that aldermanic ward to put new pay spots that this development takes away. Not familiar with whether the new meter zone is on the City's dime or on the developer's, but that's the way I believe it works.

What could they do with the plot of land between BCBS and Aqua? It seems so narrow to do much with it.

Their are plans for an Aqua II, but it also has been mentioned as the site for a CPS school.

If only we could transport it to Asia—it'd be built by 2015.

I think they are still hoping to finish it by 1993.

"Aqua 2" is a placeholder name some have assigned to the future building to occupy site "O" of the Lakeshore East master plan. Unless there's been a change in building development order, "Aqua 2/site O" is a long way down the road. The next proposed building for LSE is 375 East Wacker, which has yet to begin pre-construction marketing.

Prior to the meter lease, the developer/ building owner would have to pay CDOT continuous compensation for any meters removed. Not sure if the meter lease changes things up. It would be difficult to find a new parking zone that large to convert to metered spaces, as all of the blocks on the 16 acre site are metered. IMD may have an unmetered area left that could be turned into payed parking, or I suppose they could also pave a surface lot on one of the empty blocks and meter it.

Do people actually park in the metered spots in that surreal area of town? I've only seen people park along Paulina , and the other streets between Paulina/Ashland... the spots to the west of the Pink Line are always empty.

I have not been involved with anything beyond the relocation of a handful of meters within a ward. As far as 16 blocks worth of meters go, I have no idea!
