Edit: on second look from the proposal draw-up, the shaft portion looks wider.

This orientation provides the most clear floorspace/flexibility on a small site. Look at other constrained sites and you'll continue to see this strategy, heck look at Seagram and you'll see the same.

Added bonus of saving some costs on glazing and its an easy sell to developers.

Also how does 'kitty corner of the main tower' work? Sky bridges?

What I meant to say was "have the exterior core oriented in such a way that it's at a 45 degree corner to the main structure...the way the original idea for a spire on CPT/Nordstrom was envisioned.

But I see your point anyway. I didn't mean to dismiss the idea of separate elevator/&c. shafts to max out office space.

^ That's always the case. What you're looking at is the basic stacking of the tower. Material and facade treatments, all the things that make towers appear different from other towers arent present. If you are expecting something different in form, you will be disappointed.

For indication of scale though, here is another Boston Properties tower of near the same height...

KPF almost always does really nice work, so I was stunned by that lame design. TG that that’s not it.

You're looking at apples and oranges there. For one, what JPMC was proposing was rejected - which resulted in the plan for the model you see.

What you see in renderings when they are winding their way through the approvals process are almost always given the citation that the designs are subject to change, and that is always the case any way you look at. But more importantly and relevantly to this site, the special permits Boston Properties are seeking for this site specifically pertain to zoning, or the zoning envelope - which is the height of the setbacks, etc. You will not get a different form from what you are seeing. And that's understandable given the constraints of the site, and what's being built.

Why is it only 850' in the models? Don't they need the scale to be accurate for wind testing? That is unless it got downsized.

That tower has been in development, and the current proposal may not be what's represented on the model. Even the renderings we've seen haven't been to scale. But as far as accuracy for the test, just look at the Chrysler and Bofa towers on the model to get an idea.
