Yes, you are probably right. Unfortunately, this one has high visibility too. For out-of-town baseball fans watching games on TV, this has just become the most visible building in our city.

The parking garage needs to be painted, or maybe one of the environmental green walls like between the IBX and 1919 Market buildings. Fortunately, the building itself was placed to the far east side of the lot so as not to block out the skyline.

I would say -- although the building sucks, I hope the hotel is packed and a success. If you are a baseball fan, we will notice how the real estate along the outside/outfield portion of stadiums in DC, St. Louis (same owners, Cordish/Live! as here), Baltimore, and San Diego have drastically changed over the last decade. Granted, their ballparks are a lot closer to or in fact within downtown areas, but if this complex is a success, and finally leads to greater development at the Sports Complex it is a win.

Here is Nationals Park in DC ... literally none of those buildings existed 10 years ago:

Better looking buildings maybe, but putting this in the sports complex always made the most sense. But yea, the hotel is maybe the worst looking building I've seen in my life?

I do think it will do well though and add vibrancy to a desolate area, which is nice.

Also on the plus side, the facade looks so incredibly cheap they'll hopefully have to reskin it at some point. Doesn't exactly look like those panels are in for the long haul.

3 Philly eateries are signed to new Live! Casino in South Philly

Quote:
Three longtime players on the Philadelphia food scene will open outlets in the food hall inside the Live! Casino & Hotel Philadelphia, opening in early 2021 at Ninth Street and Packer Avenue:

Lorenzo & Sons Pizza, the South Street landmark; Sang Kee Noodle Bar & Kitchen, a partnership between veteran Chinatown restaurateur Michael Chow and the local food-services company Strother Enterprises; and Termini Bros., the South Philadelphia bakery that will mark its 100th anniversary next year.

The food hall, billed as 10th Street Market, will serve as a hub for quick eats and late-night bites. A 24-hour bar and more dining options will be announced later.

The only thing I liked about the project is the fact that unlike the Rivers Casino (SugarHouse for old school folks), this project has a hotel and Philadelphia needs as many hotels as possible. I'm still surprised that Rivers Casino hasn't followed up with an attached hotel, considering that it's nearby the Delaware River plus the views to NJ and a Delaware River hotel would do wonders for the casino, however the developers never placed a hotel and instead placed a gambling house on what's supposed to be prime real estate on the Delaware River.

A little bit off topic, but I'm hoping the the 76ers as well as the city and the state keep the team in the Wells Fargo Center. There should absolutely no excuse why the 76ers should move out of the WFC and even consider building their own arena. New York, Boston, Chicago, DC, LA, and now Detroit are able to host NBA and NHL teams in their respective arenas and I don't understand why Philadelphia is all of a sudden having problems hosting both the Flyers and 76ers. This needs to be rectified immediately!

it's not that philadelphia is having a problem hosting both teams in the WFC, it's that the sixers don't want to be tenants.
what are you hoping the city and state do about it?

Guy Fieri to open 2 restaurants at new Live! Casino in South Philadelphia

Quote:
Food Network personality Guy Fieri says he will open two “joints” — one specializing in tacos, the other in burgers — early next year at the new Philadelphia Live! Casino & Hotel coming together at Ninth Street and Packer Avenue in South Philadelphia.

“I call it a ‘joint' because what is a joint?” Fieri said, breaking into East Coast big-city dialect during a Zoom interview last week from his California home. “A joint is ‘Hey, what are you doin’? My buddy’s got this joint down the way.’” (Basically: casual, high-energy, loud.)

Philadelphia is “exactly the kind of environment we like to be in because it’s a bunch of people who love food, love going out, love entertaining, appreciate food, appreciate the energy behind food, the whole thing," Fieri said. "We’re excited. It’s going to be bigger than big.”

Cordish is billing the Fieri eateries as key venues at Live!'s 10th Street Market, which will include stands by Lorenzo & Sons Pizza, Sang Kee Noodle Bar & Kitchen, and Termini Bros. Bakery. There also will be a bar open 24/7.

Sounds like Guy Fieri is opening two jawns, not joints. He needs to get with the local lingo!

(Not just trying to make a dumb joke - supposedly jawn is just a local pronunciation of joint)

Just ignore - Wanderer has consistently had the most out of touch takes on this site for almost 15 years.

Saw it from Broad Street coming home from the last Eagles game. It's as ugly in person as in pictures. Bleh.

Why we couldn't get something like the MGM National Harbor in the DC metro area or better still puzzles me. There's so many casinos now you would think one of them want to go higher end and differentiate themselves rather be a bland slot machine warehouse.

It's one of the ugliest shit piles ever constructed. At a certain point you have to commend them for breaking new ground in the field of terrible buildings.

It's truly terrible. Where did they even find that 70s black glass? It's especially terrible when you see that Cordish has built a bunch of these and Philly's is inexplicably way worse. Here's the one in Maryland:

Even Xfinity Live was a bait and switch. There was supposed to be a hotel and a mall so everyone was okay with tearing down the Spectrum.

Cordish really can't get it together and that's a big reason that the sports complex will continue to be a soulless abyss of parking lots.

The Phillies could help this by maybe eventually developing some mixed used on Citizens Bank Way. It's closed on game days anyway and could have a great walking experience that could ripoff Yawkey Way next to Fenway.

Ding ding ding.

I wholeheartedly agree with everyone saying that what we have in South Philly is unique and, overall, works pretty well, but it could be so much more. That's why I even give any thought to a new Sixers arena being built elsewhere.

https://cordish.com/live

Cordish has built out a lot of these "Live" concepts, even some of them in the middle of nowhere in relation to the rest of a city. Look at Atlanta, the Braves decided to leave Turner Field to build a new ballpark 10 miles from downtown Atl in Cobb County. There wasn't much there at all. The Braves built the ballpark, Cordish built their Live complex (but ingrained into the ball park design), and Comcast even built an office complex there as well.
https://cordish.com/portfolio/live-at-the-battery

St. Louis - although the Cardinals ballpark is a lot closer to their downtown than Atlanta or here, the Cordish design really enhances the ballpark experience there--and has actually help lead to private development (luxury apts/condos) in the immediate ballpark area.

See here:

If the Braves/Cobb County and the Cardinals/St. Louis and Cordish can figure it out there, they can do it here.

Well they would have to build it quick if they want to open it by 2026 in time for America's 250th year and a chance at hosting the NBA all-star game.

Prime Rib steakhouse returning to Philadelphia at forthcoming Live! Casino & Hotel

Quote:
Baltimore-born steakhouse The Prime Rib is finding new life in Philly by opening an outpost at the long-awaited Live! Casino & Hotel Philadelphia, set to debut early next year in the stadium district.

The Prime Rib had a 22-year run in Philadelphia at the Warwick Hotel before it split from the corporate entity in February. The location at 1701 Locust St. is no longer affiliated with the brand and has since been operating under the monikers 1701 Steaks and Seafood and 1701 Locust.

The steakhouse is the latest to join an already robust culinary lineup at the forthcoming 1.5-million-square-foot, $700 million casino development headed to 900 Packer Ave.

Earlier this month, Emmy Award-winning celebrity chef Guy Fieri announced he’ll open two concepts at Live! Casino & Hotel Philadelphia. One is dubbed Taco Joint, and will serve up housemade tacos, guacamole, salsas and margaritas, and the other is Burger Joint, which will feature burgers with Fieri’s famous garlic-aioli-like “Donkey Sauce”, fries and handspun shakes.

Both Fieri’s eateries will be hallmarks of the casino’s 10th Street Market food hall, which will also include concepts from Philadelphia favorites Lorenzo and Sons Pizza, Sang Kee Noodle Bar & Kitchen, and Termini Brothers.

The project, which is creating about 2,000 hospitality jobs, will include an events center, 208 luxury hotel rooms, a FanDuel-branded sportsbook, 2,200 slots and electronic table games, and more than 150 live action table games such as poker.
