Average Saturday March 2022: 72,243
Average Sunday March 2022: 56,159

Average Saturday March 2019: 106,134
Average Sunday March 2019: 69,640

Saturday has recovered 68.1 percent
Sunday has recovered 80.1 percent

If weekend and night service was improved, the weekend numbers would surpass the prior peak in no time. I'm willing to bet that all the new residences being built along the PATH line is the main catalyst for the quicker weekend recovery. They may not hold a 9-5 job in the city, but they occasionally socialize there.

I'm in the city now and definitely feels as busy as ever. Summer ridership numbers will be interesting to watch.

NJ should lean on the PA to fix this in particular and NJT to significantly increase frequency on HBLR.

Average Weekday April 2019: 285,930
Average Saturday April 2019: 113,327
Average Sunday April 2019: 79,808

Percent Recovered Weekday: 47.3%
Percent Recovered Saturday: 76.7%
Percent Recovered Sunday: 74.1%

Weekday month-over-month increase from March 2022 to April 2022: 2.2%
Saturday month-over-month increase from March 2022 to April 2022: 20.3%!!

Even with the tens of thousands that have moved along the PATH line since 2019, weekday is still significantly lagging. I'm starting to think it will be a decade or more before PATH returns to the 2019 weekday peak ridership. Weekend ridership new all time highs is probably only a couple years away.

The Port Authority really needs to change focus from commuter railroad and focus on late night and weekend trips where the ridership growth has the most potential.

^ its incredibly obvious. but can they adjust their traditional thinking and act on this new reality? and if so, how could they pull off adding more service? for one thing, i am still experiencing mta subway delays at times they say due to staffing. and you know they all are going to eat that biden operating money up quick.

Once they burn through the COVID cash agencies will cut night and weekend service. Mark my words.

I'm afraid you're right. Government agencies have been flush with COVID cash. With rising inflation and the windfalls drying up, there will be though decisions to be made. For PATH, fare increases and/or service cuts are likely.

June 2022 Weekday - 148,026
June 2022 Saturday - 93,512
June 2022 Sunday - 72,160

June 2019 Weekday -292,316
June 2019 Saturday -113,275
June 2019 Sunday - 90,076

Weekday Recovered 50.6%
Saturday Recovered 82.6%
Sunday Recovered 80.1%

On the positive side, all the NIMBYs and misinformed people that said the PATH system was being overloaded can shut the f*ck up. Barely above 50 percent from pre-pandemic levels for weekdays AND capacity/signaling improvements are still underway.

Wait they're not supposed to open Portal between 5-10AM for this very reason or have they gone back to the old stupid way and not said anything.

July 2022 Weekday - 138,958
July 2022 Saturday - 84,655
July 2022 Sunday - 65,885

Why the big declines from June? New COVID spike? Or just seasonal?

Accounting for travel patterns pre-pandemic, only 48.2% as many people rode the system on a weekday in July 2022 when compared to the same period in July 2019. When comparing June 2022 and June 2019, that number was 50.6%.

An interesting data point to watch. This is the first time that would indicate that the ridership recovery has stalled. On a positive side, more people are using the system on Sundays. This further supports that the PATH is transiting away from a commuter system.

July 2022 Weekday - 138,958
July 2022 Saturday - 84,655
July 2022 Sunday - 65,885

July 2019 Weekday - 288,163
July 2022 Saturday - 101,049
July 2022 Sunday - 79,418

July Weekday Recovered 48.2%
July Saturday Recovered 83.8%
July Sunday Recovered 83.0%

June Saturday Recovered 82.6%

PATH should get a nice bump in the Fall numbers. MTA is reporting a bump in weekday ridership this September. Probably a combination of more in-office work starting post-Labor Day, mask requirement removed and increased tourism + school start.

i dk where else to put this —
big public/private tod plans by the nj gov and njtransit for metropark/woodbridge and new brunswick:

MetroPark to become more than a train station under plan to build offices, apartments

Updated: Oct. 12, 2022
By Larry Higgs | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

A “soulless” 12-acre parking lot that’s sat dormant since the coronavirus pandemic next to the MetroPark train station in Woodbridge will become a mixed use development with several hundred apartments, office space and retail stores under a transit-oriented development plan announced Wednesday by Gov. Phil Murphy.

***

MetroPark isn’t the only TOD underway in Middlesex County. Similar development is planed or happening in New Brunswick, also on the NEC line and in North Brunswick, the site of a future train station. That station requires building the “Midline Loop” flyover to allow NJ Transit trains to cross a busy section of the NEC Amtrak dubbed the raceway without getting in the way of high-speed Acela trains.

Good call!

Sept 2022 - Avg. Weekday: 157,982
Sept 2022 - Avg. Saturday: 100,592
Sept 2022 - Avg. Sunday  :  71,504

We may soon see weekend numbers hit all time new ridership highs while weekday is still lagging at only 47 percent. The impacts from work from home really showing itself here in the data.

Important milestone reached. PATH now carries more riders now than it did pre-pandemic… on Sundays. Saturday ridership is also almost fully recovered. Weekday ridership is still way down by about 110,000 per day.

PATH should not be considered a commuter railroad and the Port Authority should capitalize on that by improving weekend and late night service.

100% agree. PATH needs more late night service!
