The Popeyes on Canal Street is closed. There’s a ‘closed for renovation’ sign on the door. Is this the BIG renovation we’ve been waiting on? I remember someone posted Popeyes rendering pics on this site about a year ago.

Lucid, a New Orleans tech darling, being bought by Cint Group for over $1 billion

Lucid, a darling of New Orleans' nascent tech sector, has become Louisiana's first "unicorn", selling for just over $1 billion to Cint Group, a Swedish technology company.

Founded in New Orleans in 2010 by Patrick Comer, Lucid gathers and analyzes survey and other data for companies looking for customer insights. It now has more than 230 employees and offices in Europe and Asia.

The sale of Lucid follows hot on the heels of the sale of construction software company Levelset, which sold in September for $500 million, the previous record start-up sale for Louisiana until Lucid.

The sale of Lucid for more than $1 billion in cash and shares marks a major new milestone for New Orleans. It is the first start-up tech company to have reached a valuation of over $1 billion, bestowing the coveted "unicorn" status that attracts the attention of the tech world at large, especially investors in the industry.

It's my impression that the two recent sales were the two biggest companies here. Am I wrong? Are there others that I'm just not aware of? I used to read silicon bayou news but that seems to only be updated once a week or so now as opposed to every day.

Geocent was also acquired today. Those are three of the largest homegrown tech companies in town. No sale price mentioned in the linked article. This is all good news for the New Orleans tech scene, and should spur further investment in other startups. https://resources.geocent.com/geocen...rt-of-sev1tech

Don’t forget this acquisition! At least here the company leaders are promising new jobs for the region

https://www.nola.com/news/business/a...9ff8e4016.html

The recent stream of exits is pretty amazing: TurboSquid, LevelSet, Geocent, and Lucid (and Brother’s). That said, it will be interesting to see how each acquisition ends up in terms of future footprint in the region. Furthermore, we’ll see if there’s notable increase in Angel/Venture capital. Def lots of risk (don’t forget how the O&G industry packed up for Houston or Smoothie King left for Dallas) and lots of potential reward.

There really aren’t any high growth/high ceiling local tech startups left around. I mean, GlobalStar’s seen its fortunes turn based on Apple rumors. But smaller, tech companies like 365Connect, Revelry, and others don’t appear to have immediate large-scale growth potential.

Instead of seeing a bonanza of large, homegrown tech companies in the future, we’re more likely to see increased remote work opportunities lead to more people setting up home offices around here. That’d be good for home prices and residential real estate, but commercial real estate less so…

The whole remote office thing is why I dont see any real movement of these offices to other places. its just not a big deal anymore , so no need to move offices if not necessary

Cantrell Allocates $7M for Affordable Housing Development

Mayor Cantrell recently approved the Redevelopment Framework which will make available under- utilized publicly owned lots for development. The Redevelopment Program will be ideal for budding developers and will provide infill development, which is often not the first choice of large-scale developers.

The City held a well-attended informational session for stakeholders on Oct. 21, 2021. The NOFA is expected to fund five to seven developments that will produce 400-600 units. The funding awarded by the City will likely be matched with other federal and state funding such as Low Income Housing Tax Credits. These dollars serve as gap funding and usually comprise 10-15 percent of the project’s total development costs. In addition to providing much needed housing units, there are also secondary benefits to housing development, such as providing a huge economic impact and increase to the area’s tax base.

My view is that more remote folks in New Orleans is good and better than nothing, but centralized HQ offices and engaged corporate leaders being in the city will make the New Orleans region even stronger. I recognize that COVID has changed things permanently, but I wouldn’t trust that this current level of tolerance for remote work will last forever. It will taper but stay stronger than pre-pandemic.

I think many companies that are currently remote-friendly will start to bring most people back into offices again, whether through force or by rewarding the people who show up in person every day. I see it already at my company. To me it’s a question of “when” not “if” for the most part. The next few years though should continue to allow for people to spread out, and if a lot of people like being in New Orleans, that might influence companies to open up satellite offices here.

Last week I saw that the Birmingham AL metro area is almost the size of New Orleans. And that scared me!

I think I was more indicating there isnt much incentive right now to move offices that are already operating.

Having graduated from Tulane Architecture, (some memories wonderful, some absolutely horrid) I must say I have nothing but fond memories of the building. Which leads me to wonder - what egregious sin did Loyola University commit to deserved that abomination?

Hey fellow alum!

It faces an equally ugly parking garage and chiller plant on the Loyola side. The riverside wing of the building is sorta visible from Loyola's quad but not really:
https://goo.gl/maps/4vds94kRyDqa8ab46

They were talking about this renovation 8 years ago when I graduated. KieranTimberlake was supposed to do it, they had a nice schematic design. Not sure why they got fired and Trapolin-Peer brought in. I assume fundraising was a challenge, not nearly as many deep-pocketed donors compared to business/law/medicine so maybe they just needed to start from scratch with a much leaner budget.

The blank wall facing east is unfortunate, but with limited space the building has to go hard to the property line. The only way to get more windows on that side is to buy air rights from Loyola. If I were Loyola I wouldn't sell the air rights, since Stallings Hall is a prime candidate for a bigger building in the future and they would probably expand it over West Road up to the property line as well.

It’s no reason to be scared of BHam metro even coming close to Nola metro. Their growth percentage wasn’t more then ours the past 10 years and Nola has a slew of huge projects that can and most likely will propel the metro to Nashville’s or Charlotte’s level.

Louis Armstrong international Airport: new international carriers and breeze airways hub with possible international expansion.

Charity hospital redevelopment and bio district expansion

New Orleans East:
- sixflags redevelopment
- NASA space campus office park
- NASA advanced manufacturing park
- Lincoln beach redevelopment

Entrepreneurship:
- opportunity Hub office / incubator development
- Ideavillage’s program expansions
- slew of other new co-working spaces

Tech/media:
- becoming a digital media and video game hub
- film expansion in metro area
- Nola is on many major companies shortlist based off remote workers locating to the area

Public transit expansion

The list for Nola metro goes on and the recent acquisitions have put Nola in the spotlight for tech trust me it’s more to come.
