I get it, labour laws and what not, but you would think that advancing technologies would have compensated at least a bit.

Thank the NCC for that!

How is this the NCC's fault?

They slow down the process with stupid demands - true of most projects.

What demands? The NCC handed over the lands and basically stepped away. They rubber stamped a few approvals. This has nothing to do with the NCC. I imagine there might have been some delay while they were waiting for the O-Train trench to be widened, which never happened, so that's on the City and Province.

The hospital is needed and is going to be an awesome place to work but man that parking garage is a beast. Let's hope they beautify it a bit and the greenery fills in quick!

Wow, what an incredible disappointment. They are doubling down on the bar-code look, which almost always looks terrible in execution and will age poorly.

Not only is the cladding changed, but the building has been downsized a bit... the bulbous ground floor cafeteria/auditorium/meeting rooms feature has been shrunken and rectangularized, no doubt for budgetary purposes. I wonder what else got changed that isn't as evident?

Gahhhh..I really didn't need to see those renders next to each other.

The new renders remind me of the new uOttawa Faculty of Health Sciences building at 200 Lees, and not in a good way.

I'm not surprised they are cutting back. Hearing word that, despite us being >100% capacity all the time, they will be cutting back acute beds at the hospital....for budgetary reasons. What a shit show!

Well an extra road and a couple of intersections they added in the updated plan, won't pay for themselves. Gotta cut somewhere.

I don't think it's as bad as uOttawa's Lees building. I did prefer the old design, but the west tower looked kind of awkward. If they wanted to make cuts, they should have stuck with the first design, but align the windows. Simplify that design instead of a new barcode design.

I still think it will look quite nice in the end. Much nicer than the messy hospitals and expansions of the last 50 years.

Well that's disappointing. At least our Provincial Government is focused on what's important: spending millions on access to booze and removing bike lanes.

NCC unveils latest designs for the rooftop park at Dow's Lake
Plans include tennis courts, gardens, viewpoints

Jayden Dill · CBC News
Posted: Jan 22, 2026 7:02 PM EST | Last Updated: 1 hour ago

The National Capital Commission (NCC) has shared new designs for the rooftop park that will crown the parking garage at The Ottawa Hospital's new Civic campus at Dow's Lake.

The designs, unveiled on Thursday, show five acres of green space atop the hospital's four-storey garage, which will contain more than 2,800 parking spaces.

A folded pathway connects the rooftop park to a courtyard at the intersection of Prince of Wales Drive and Preston Street.

Nicole Howard, a senior architect with the NCC, said the rooftop will offer programming and public amenities, including "additional viewpoints, gardens, tennis courts as well as active and passive play spaces."

While work on the garage is underway, construction on the hospital has not yet begun.

CBC asked The Ottawa Hospital to provide an updated timeline and costs but did not receive a response.

Here are some of the other new rooftop renderings shared by NCC. The last shows part of the pathway that will lead up to the roof.

Though not as "burmed" as initially shown, it still largely keeps the original intent, so far. (Unlike the Lansdowne 2.0 arena).

Not something anyone ever says of a parking structure, but it should be an interesting addition to the area that offers a new experience and view points (Unlike Lansdowne 2.0).

In fairness, the arena roof at Lansdowne will offer some cool new viewpoints.

This does look good, although I wonder about access. It will clearly be accessible from the hospital, but from Dow's Lake it appears the choice will be an enclosed parking garage staircase or that winding pathway. Neither of those provide a simple, easy way to access the roof. To me, if you are looking to entice people to climb 3 or 4 stories in the area, you need to provide an easy direct access route. I'm a little disappointed in that.

For 2.0, you mean field side? Cause we lost the edgewalk that would have given us 360 degrees of new views.

As for access at the Civic Hospital parking park, here's the slide. Each of the orange arrows are a vertical circulation tower with stairs and elevators. This does not count the ramp system, the bridge to the hospital or the bridge to Dow's Lake Station (though that will probably be plugged into the north orange arrow).
