Also, could you please go over to the Provo forum and shed some light on the different aspects of dredging or not dredging Utah Lake. I think it's probably one of the most important development issues the Wasatch Front must decide over the next couple of years. I think a lot of us would like to see some friendly discussion on the matter.

Here’s some general info to think about. The purpose behind the dredging is to mitigate toxic algae blooms. Algae blooms like a few things things - warmer water, fertilizer (nitrogen and phosphorus), and stagnant water. By dredging and deepening the lake the idea is the lake will cool (deeper water does not cool/heat as fast), mix more and algae blooms will decrease. One thing to consider, does depending the lake mean there will be enough water to fill the lake given worsening drought conditions? Im assuming maybe the dredging will be designed to deepen the lake and take up space with the islands to keep the same water volume, so water volume may remain unchanged. Another problem - with the addition of more residents adjacent to the lake there will be added fertilizers (lawn) stressors that inhibit algae blooms. This has been the problem at Utah lake, with more and more development next to the lake and the agriculture south of the lake fertilizer input has increased and worsened algae blooms over the years. If they can address the root of the problem fertilizer input and limit it then that would help. There’s probably a myriad of other environmental issues and things I’m not thinking about but those are my initial thoughts.
On a side note, anyone who’s interested in development and our relationship with nature may be interested in the book “The Control of Nature” by John Mcphee.
