It's hard to tell because the drawing isn't very true to life. The building to the right is an awesome building but the drawing doesn't really show this one way or another. On the other hand, I'm not a fan of the building to the left and it's the same thing, so who knows.

The thing is that the architect on record here is a guy from Chicago. That is definitely not the case with their numerous other hotels around the world. They seem to have a template when they're the ones building the building - at least with colors. However, I'm slightly hopeful that the Chicago architect they picked will do a better job of making the building fit in with the rest of the neighborhood. I'd be absolutely stunned if this wasn't the first hotel he designed for the Toyoko brand.

Interesting... this will certainly be one to keep an eye on over the next year then. West Loop is out of control

Developer acquires River North mixed-use property near tower project
A 60-story development is planned next door to Continental Property's recent purchase

"The corner property is home to the pizzeria Giordano’s, and next door to a planned 60-story tower designed by Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill for Symmetry Development and Fordham Real Estate"

"That plan was apparently abandoned, as Symmetry returned last year with the Carillon project, according to Curbed. That construction has Reilly’s blessing and includes 216 hotel rooms, 120 hotel timeshares, 246 luxury condos, and 30,000 square feet of retail space, Curbed reported."

The Carillon tower is back on?

The most recent Curbed article I found (April 2017) says quite the opposite:

The Real Deal author must be confused ...or have newer info?

Believe the new Ballast Point Brewery will be part of this development. In fact, I *think* that might be the terrace in the middle left of the first pic. That said, might not as I thought build-out progress was farther along than this pic indicates.

From Chicago Magazine:
Ballast Point is one of the country’s most popular (and widely distributed) craft beer brands. Their beer has been in Chicago for a long time, but now a huge Ballast Point Tasting Room and Kitchen (212 N. Green Street) is coming to the West Loop.

“Chicago is one of the most progressive culinary scenes in the nation, if not the world,” says Colin MacLaggan, Ballast Point’s corporate executive chef. “It’s a really hot beer scene. This is the number one spot that jumped out at us. It’s always been talked about.” Ballast Point is based in San Diego and has a number of California tasting rooms, but this is the first Midwestern location for the brewery.

The West Loop location is a 12,000-square-foot space in a restored building. While the majority of the space will be used for the restaurant, there will be a brewing operation, mostly for R&D and small batches. MacLaggan also plans to make special dinners that come with custom, tiny-batch beers made just to pair with the food.

This is from 2011. I found something from 2016 stating that they're changing some of the cladding from pre cast to metal panel. It claims that the change will not adversely affect the neighborhood/surrounding buildings.

Wow... those admin relief elevations are hand-drafted. You don't see that anymore lol.

Edit: Maybe not. Could just be the image quality

This proposal doesn't address the core issues with the Thompson Center, which is all the deferred maintenance over the years have compounded to an unaffordable pill for the state to swallow. That, and the massive heating and cooling costs. The building is poorly ventilated/insulated.

I'd love for the building to be saved in some form, and the above rendering seems like a nice compromise, but I'm not sure if the numbers add up on it, even with relatively unrestricted zoning on a central Loop parcel. In either case, the state really needs to part with that building ASAP, because if this business cycle comes to a close then the state may be stuck with it for up to another decade. Not sure if they can afford it for that much longer.
I think the idea is to have the atrium be open to the exterior and close off all the surrounding offices, eliminating any need to heat or cool the vast space.

Surface tension - like water on a clean table - the middle of the lake is slightly higher than the edges.

^ right. Horizon is only about 12 miles before effect begins.

that's why even the national weather service starts having doppler "sight" problems between 15 and 19 miles from a radar site and still needs weather spotters!
