The columns have been going up in 3-floor sections so far with the exception of the first set of columns out of the ground, which were only a 2-floor section.

Even at this relatively early stage of construction the enormous size of this building is becoming evident. It truly will be an amazing building in every sense.

The first columns were only 2 floors tall, but those two floors are the same height together as three regular floors.

Not according to the live webcams. Unless you are talking about an amount (a few inches up to a couple of feet) than can't be seen on the webcams.

I'm sorry, I haven't been paying close attention to this tower. Will the Bow have concrete elevator cores? Or are they using some other design like a steel cage? I just am not used to seeing no concrete in a structure this tall, at least for stairs/elevator shafts.

Yup, no concrete (except the floor topping). You will notice as it goes up lots of crossbracing in the steel. The sixth floor has bunch of extra cross bracing in the floor, plus with the shape of the building, there is naturally a lot of cross bracing, as the beams aren't going to be all parallel like they would be in a square tower. The every six floors is also a node in the structural diagrid.

They are using some temporary cross bracing as well, that will be removed as the building gets taller I imagine.

The atrium diagrid will provide quite a bit of stiffness, as those steel pieces will be huge. None of it is installed yet.

Thanks for the info YNAT!

Quick question:

What are some other large buildings that showcase stairwells similar to what the Bow will do with it's north stairwells? The Bow's north stairwell is ground level to the roof - all clear glass. 774 vertical feet of glass, with no spandrel, and a continuous staircase (2 actually) going all the way up.

The one building I can think of is Foster's Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank, but that doesn't even really come close to what the Bow will have.

I think it's interesting that none of the renderings that we've seen really showcase this feature at all. It must be that they sort of want it to be a surprise when it goes up.

I thought I read somewhere (around 9-11) that it was code, in Canada, to have concrete cores (stairs & elevator shafts). That must not be correct if there is going to be no concrete (besides the floor & roof plates) above ground floor, in the Bow.

Most buildings integrate some kind of concrete core for the services and elevator shafts, but it doesn't always have to be done like this.

Steel is incredibly durable and strong, and if properly hermetically sealed floor to floor at the core, you'd need a perfect storm to damage it. You can't blow up a propane tank and hurt steel it takes hours of constant heating especially when talking about regular hydrocarbon fires.

So while it is thought to be safer it really is just cheaper to have a concrete core.

Approximately. The steel columns are 3 floors tall so the visible progress is in 3 floor jumps at a time followed by a couple weeks of little progress then repeat.

Now that the colum is up to the 12th floor, we can judge the speed by the date the first column went up to the 9th floor, which was 5 weeks ago.

So, it looks like they are doing 3 floors every 5 weeks or so.

This lines up with the official statement saying that they are on pace to be 30 floors tall at the end of the year, as staying on the 3 floors every 5 weeks pace means that they would place the first column reaching the 33rd floor in early January 2010.

I don't think I understand what you are asking.
