Toronto is very nice but it lacks pedestrian areas, green spaces and there is far too many car lanes going through the down town area.

When I visited Melbourne I was amazed at how similar the two cities are. Especially out of the CBD. I agree with Osmo that Melbourne is what Toronto could be if it got its act together.

Toronto is a little bit bigger scale and higher density suburbs.

I also agree with you that Toronto lacks the green space and pedestrian only zones that Melbourne has established. Melbourne has a continuity that ties everything together seemlessly. So many little things that make a huge difference.

I heard that the Commonwealth Games initiated alot of urban renewal. Also, the Casino-Yarra river development. Is this true?

Yes, there are still parts near the river that are still under development.
Also the Dockland area is fairly new

I prefer Sydney, better skyline, denser streets. (I should be careful saying that though, Sydney and Melbourne have a rivalry that can only compare to New York vs Chicago)
But Melbourne has some great old buildings. It is the city to visit if you're after 19th century Australian architecture. Victorian gold rush turned it into a very wealthy city and the countries largest, and lots of fine buildings were put up. Sydney surpassed it in the 20th century.
It also has some of the countries tallest buildings, Eureka at 300m, is second only to the Q1 Building in Queensland.
Largest tram (streetcar) network in the world.

I live here for 13 years
The bike share system cost $2.50 a day or $50 per year and they have bike stations all around the city

Amazing street art. The urban vibe depicted in your shots is so energizing. Melbourne always gets touted as being one of the most "livable cities" but it seems to be much more then that. How quickly do the street cars get around? Do people just take them for very short rides or do they go a few kilometers on them?

It's one of the largest network in the world with 28 lines so on some lines it can take more than 1 hour to get from one end to the other
