Pretty big VBC expansion proposal. Hits on some missing venue needs. It also looks like they are betting on the Pinhook creek redevelopment happening soon.

It's about freaking time... convention centers are excellent marketing tools and Huntsville has been behind in the game for years. I say that as someone who's been visiting the VBC since he was a kid (I'm 27).

Very excited about a 1200 person music venue. They use the Georgia Theatre as the sample picture in the slide presentation. Something like that would be perfect.

That looks about the size of the House of Blues that I went to in Las Vegas. Makes me wonder if the VBC could partner with House of Blues for the expansion.

Looks like the indoor facility will be almost the same size as the one in Birmingham.

The RCP Companies Director Odie Fakhouri said the Huntsville location will be a "first of its kind" for High Point but did not explain what that meant.

I'm wondering whether HSV location will actually become the largest of all since an outdoor adrenaline zone with a 45-foot climbing wall and event lawn for recreational outdoor climbing are also in the plans.

long needed addition to Huntsville's attractions

By Lee Roop lroop@al.com
A new "state-of-the-art planetarium" is planned for the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, the center announced Friday. The center's current SpaceDome IMAX Theater will be renovated into the new facility, the center said.
Intuitive and Research Technology Corp. will partner with the center's foundation in the renovation "to include planetary and advanced digital theater technology," a press release said. The target opening date is in 2019 in time for the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing

That outdoor adrenaline zone is what will set it apart. From the videos it'll also be a ropes course and Zip Line next to Top Golf. MidCity will def make us a Destination city in Alabama.

RCP Companies officials will break ground Tuesday at 2pm on a previously announced retail project at the southeast corner of Bob Wallace Avenue and Memorial Parkway across from Whole Foods.
The project will be home to Chuy's and ULTA Beauty.
RCP Director Odie Fakhouri said they plan to unveil two additional first-to-Alabama concepts at the event.

I think this is a monumental time for the Tennessee Valley...

This will maintain jobs in Decatur and create even more in Huntsville.

I think the region has finally reached 'critical mass'...

Not quite, all of these projects need to be completed.
Road infrastructure needs to be drastically improved
A low cost airline needs to begin service to HSV. 1.2 million passengers per year and another 30-40 k potential can't be ignored much longer. Talking to you Frontier.
Each job created causes an additional 2.5 jobs. Mid City, Bridge Street, City
Centre, Towne Madison, and Constellation are well poised to capture the millennials.
The newly adopted downtown Master plan hopefully will be implemented sooner than later. Developers are well aware or soon will know what's happening here.

These two points are big...along with securing a foothold in the private space industry. As the entire industry moves from NASA as the only player to increased private industry it is important Huntsville gets in on it.

Going back to your two points I had a good conversation with someone in the Chamber who said Bezos was extremely impressed with Huntsville. I am sure he says that with every community, but I was told seemed genuinely amazed at some of the things going on here considering we are a small to almost mid tier city. He noted specifically HudsonAlpha, the co-working/entrepreneur facilities, and UAH.

To the developers, point there has been significant increase in the out of town developers looking to get into Huntsville. Our market has largely been dominated by local developers/home builders with a couple of exceptions I would expect that to change.

A Brass Tap will bring an upscale craft beer bar, sports TV and live music option to the center. Director Odie Fakhouri said they expect to announce another new-to-Alabama regional steakhouse and seafood restaurant spanning 6,000 square feet within the next 10 days.

A 2 percent lodging tax increase and $1 per room night surcharge would fund the project. If the city council approves those measures at its July 13 meeting, the VBC will move forward with expansion plans. The music hall component would be the first phase. Construction would hopefully begin in January 2018 and completed by May or June of 2019.
