Snow Mountain is the closest to me at 7,055 ft with a prominence of 2,496 ft. I forgot to mention I live in the mountains .

Thinking of some non-American cities that have mountains near or even inside the city...

Rio de Janeiro
CBD elevation: 0 ft
Highest nearby peak: 3,350 ft(Pico da Tijuca)
Distance: 7.5 miles

The mountains in and around Rio aren't that tall, but Rio has what is perhaps the most dramatic urban topography in the world due to the mountainous terrain.

Santiago, Chile
CBD elevation: 1,870 ft
Highest nearby peak: 17,783 ft (Cerro El Plomo)
Distance: 30 miles

Nearby mountainous terrain seems fairly common among Pacific Rim cities, but Santiago might have the most dramatic backdrop of them all. The entire city is surrounded by large mountains, including the Andes mountain range to both the north and east of the city.

Tokyo
CBD elevation: 82 ft (Shibuya)
Highest nearby peak: 12,388 feet
Distance: 58 miles

Camel's Hump (4,083 feet) in Vermont is about 20 miles from downtown Burlington.

I haven't been in person since I was a child, but there are cool pictures of Mexico City's prominent peaks. Popocatepetl has the most striking pictures:

https://implicado.wordpress.com/2012...cos-city-view/

Despite Mexico City's high elevation of 7,350 ft above sea level, Popocatepetl is still very prominent at 17,694 ft., despite being 40 miles away. Extra points because it is active and still fairly regularly causes flights and school to be cancelled.

Another interesting thread would be both the highest peak within city limits, and the widest range of elevations in city limits.

There are lots of global cities with nearby mountains. Two that come to mind are Tehran, with mountains right along the city's edge, and Monterrey MX, with mountains inside city limits if I recall correctly.

Grandview Peak would be that for Salt Lake at 9,410 ft.

Salt Lake's elevation is 4,265 feet.

Salt Lake from Grandview:

Mt. Lukens is within the city limits of Los Angeles with an elevation of 5,075 Ft and rising. So LA has a vertical rise of 5,075 for now.

Vancouver (BC) rules. From sea-level to snow-capped peaks. Volcanoes too.

Hamilton, ON has a relatively unique geographical feature: a ~300ft tall escarpment ridge (colloquially referred to as "the mountain" locally) cutting the city effectively in half.

It's nowhere close to real mountains though.

The 6th and 7th most topographically prominent peaks in the lower 48 are located in Southern California. On a clear day both are visible from DTLA (about 80 miles away).

I've been to Mexico City 3 times now and I don't think I ever saw a mountain. Maybe due to air quality? I knew the city was at a very high elevation, but within your day to day experience within the city you don't really notice them. I've also been to Bogota and the mountains are very prominent in the layout and feel of the city. They're literally everywhere, very visible as the city sits in what feels like a valley between the ridges and peaks.

Seoul has Namsan (mountain) right in the centre and is surrounded by mountains.

Then there's Tokyo:

And Hong Kong:

The obvious answer is Portland and Mt Hood.

Couple from east coast (obviously no comparison with West but this is sort of the best we got). Asheville NC another good contender (not pictured).

Burlington VT, and Conway NH, respectively:

I agree! I posted a photo of Burlington with Camel's Hump in the background earlier in this thread but Mount Mansfield also works!
