There's also the old Dominick's on Broadway that burned down before being redeveloped into a vertical shopping mall, but that was also never a full-fledged suburban parking lot.

If anything, sometimes these shopping centers get more valuable as the surrounding area gets gentrified. The mall with the Jewel and Lowe's in Wicker Park could have been redeveloped, but they had no problem finding tenants willing to pay top dollar to be in a wealthy area with plenty of parking.

The Jewel on the 3600 Block of Southport comes to mind too. Was an old suburban grocery format, and has since been much improved.

Bob Mariano did a few of these rebuilds too when he led Dominick's (Lincoln/Foster, Sheridan/Foster, Chicago/Damen). The first one is a Pete's now and the other two are Mariano's.

But notably all of these stores were already pretty compact, built on the typical 120' deep Chicago lot along commercial streets, with a parking lot off to the side. What we're talking about are larger shopping centers that are at least 3x-4x that deep, deep enough that the parking can be in front of the store and not off to the side. I haven't seen any of these get redeveloped in Chicago - for a hot second there was a plan to turn Lake Meadows Plaza into a mixed use development, but the owners just decided to rehab the existing shopping center to get new tenants.

FYI, Chicago wasn't built with lots this large typically, so if you see one, there's a good chance it was either an industrial brownfield at one point or was cleared by the government for urban renewal.

From Block Club Chicago:

Park District officials unveiled two design options to overhaul Margaret T. Burroughs Beach, 3100 S. DuSable Lake Shore Drive, during a virtual community meeting Tuesday.

Both proposals would replace the existing beach house with three buildings that would house a lifeguard station, expanded restrooms and concession facilities, but with slightly different layouts.

It's a pretty standard suburban style Hampton Inn. At least it should go up quickly.

Not satisfied with outraging Chicagoans with the suggestion that they should put ketchup on their hot dogs, the celebrity TV chef Gordon Ramsay has announced, via Instagram, that he will be bringing a second restaurant to Chicago, following Gordon Ramsay Burger. The new spot, scheduled to open in 2023 is called — you knew this was coming — Gordon Ramsay Hell’s Kitchen.

And yes, Gordon Ramsay Hell’s Kitchen will look just like the set of Hell’s Kitchen the show, Ramsay confirmed in an interview with the Sun-Times, complete with a red kitchen and a blue kitchen and a large rendering of the flame-filled Hell’s Kitchen logo that will greet visitors at the entrance. He did not say whether he would be yelling at chefs and diners as well.

Ramsay will take over the former Cantina Laredo at 508 N. State Street in River North, just two blocks from Gordon Ramsay Burger. It’s two stories and 18,000 square feet, and Ramsay tells the Sun-Times that while he didn’t feel it was an appropriate space for a Gordon Ramsay Steak, he thinks it has the potential to be the best Gordon Ramsay Hell’s Kitchen in America.

LOL. Of course it got approved. We only just recently established design review for PDs, and this PD was approved back in 2016.

Here is the final site plan courtesy of Chicago YIMBY. There is indeed a parking lot which is... not great, even though the project IS taking advantage of TOD parking reductions.

This is in the IMD Gateway development at Damen & Ogden. The hotel will be directly west of the strip mall they built last year.
